“I’m the guy who dives into the system and analyzes the data,” says Marc Conrad, Assistant Director of IT at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Marc joined the hospital’s IT team in 2008, coming from the banking sector where he worked in data security and IT risk management. “People don’t realize how many facets IT has—it’s not just fixing things when they break. There’s networking, programming, tech support, interfacing, database administration, and much more. I focus more on the data side, handling projects that require data to move between systems and entities. I work very closely with finance and revenue cycle on a daily basis; especially during audits and create reports to solve problems and improve processes. I also collaborate with the Quality department on mandatory reporting.”

“I’ve always been good at solving complex problems,” Marc explains. “What I enjoy most is the challenge of taking raw data and transforming it into something meaningful that helps the hospital run more efficiently and ultimately benefits patients. SBELIH is close to home, and it’s where I can use my skills to make a difference.”

Beyond the day-to-day IT tasks and larger projects, Marc also mentors his team and tackles practical challenges alongside them. “Bill Haining, our IT Director, and I work well together—he’s incredibly driven. The team here is fantastic; we’re always ready to step up and help each other. Everyone is solutions-oriented and eager to solve problems. Often, the issue isn’t even within IT, but that doesn’t stop us from trying to help. For entry-level positions, what matters most to us is how you think, not just what you know, we can always teach the technical skills.”

IT Professionals Day is September 17, and we celebrate Marc and all of those in IT here at SBELIH!

We are so grateful to Corcoran Cares, an in-house non-profit organization of the Corcoran Group real estate company, for choosing the ELIH Foundation as one of this year's beneficiaries.

Last Friday morning, Mary Slattery, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker, and Ernie Cervi, Regional Senior VP, co-chairs of Corcoran Cares, presented a check to Sheri Winter Parker North Fork Real Estate, ELIH Foundation Board Member, who nominated the ELIH Foundation for this generous donation.

Corcoran Cares has donated over $4 million to worthy charities in the regions they serve, since its inception. The donations come from agents and staff at the Corcoran Group and it is a meaningful way to help improve the quality of life in the communities where they live and work.

It's International Clean Hands Week! 🙌

When it comes to hand hygiene, just remember “Two or Twenty.” While washing your hands with soap and water, either hum Happy Birthday twice or wash for 20 seconds. Turn off the water with a clean, dry paper towel — and keep that clean, dry paper towel for the door handle to open the door with. Otherwise, your hands will be dirty again!

Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Week, celebrated from September 14–20, honors the vital contributions of NPD practitioners. At SBELIH, Holly Patrick, MSN, RN, Director of Education and Practice Development, and Aaron Krebo, BSN, RN, CCRN, Medical Nurse Educator, are at the forefront of our education initiatives. Recently, they introduced new, state-of-the-art defibrillators to the SBELIH staff.

These advanced defibrillators are designed to be user-friendly, guiding the patient care team through every step with real-time feedback during CPR. The machine’s pads provide detailed instructions to help deliver high-quality CPR, offering real-time pressure, pacing, and compression depth data. Doctors and nurses who have worked with the new devices value the active feedback and are confident that this technology will be lifesaving in critical moments.

NPD practitioners are crucial in nursing education and development, offering continuous learning opportunities throughout a nurse’s career. Their work ensures that both nurses and healthcare organizations are recognized for providing quality, evidence-based care and maintaining the highest standards of patient safety.

September marks Hunger Action Month, and here at SBELIH, we’ve partnered with Food Rescue US – North Fork to help ensure that our local community has access to the food they need to thrive.

Since April when the partnership began, Food Rescuers have saved 634 pounds of food, delivering it directly to CAST. “This partnership is essential—it’s brilliant,” says Holly Cato from Food Rescue US – North Fork, who picks up food from SBELIH weekly. “Rob Galinski and his Nutritional Services team pack up the surplus from our hospital’s Greenhouse Grill at the end of each day, and I bring it straight to CAST. Every little bit helps, and it all reaches those in need the very same day.”

“Nearly a third of the food in this country goes to waste,” adds Paul Connor, CAO of SBELIH. “Addressing food insecurity and promoting health equity are integral to our social mission. SBELIH has been closely connected to this community for 119 years, and we remain committed to finding ways we can make a difference.”

“This program is unique because the hospital is donating prepared foods,” notes Linda Sweeney, VP of Foundation and External Affairs at SBELIH.

Stephanie McEvily of Food Rescue US – North Fork elaborates: “Many people don’t have the time or resources to cook. By rescuing prepared food, we make sure nothing goes to waste. There’s such a sense of caring, here you feel like you’re in human hands.”

“We also see support from our own employees,” says Rob Galinski, Director of Nutritional Services at SBELIH, noting the contributions to the hospital’s ongoing Food Drive. “Every week, there’s something new in the big red bins in the lobby.”

Today, Patriot Day, those of us at SBELIH remember the heroes, those we lost, and the resolve of the people of the USA. We will never forget.

❤️ “Good health starts in a clean environment,” says Martha Melendez, Environmental Services Tech – Housekeeping. Originally from Honduras, Martha moved to Greenport with her family in 2016 because, “I like helping people, it’s my passion, and this is how I help. Destiny brought me here when I wanted a change in my life. I feel good that I can clean and help people in this way.”

Martha works in the OR Unit but has worked all over the hospital, “In the OR you clean surgical rooms, and everything must be sanitized. The products we use in the OR are different because we deal with bodily fluids. We are specifically trained to work in the OR and we always wear gloves and different scrubs that are also sanitized.”

“There’s a difference between clean and sanitized,” says Martha. “In the OR rooms where we do surgery all the tools and instruments are cleaned daily, so they are always ready for an emergency.”

Before moving to the United States, Martha worked as a nurses aide and looks forward to being a nurses aide sometime in the future here at SBELIH. For now, she says, “In my department my supervisor is open to ideas and working with me so I can be there for my family.”

National Healthcare Environmental Services Week is September 8-14 and we celebrate Martha and all of those in EVS here at SBELIH!

🌟 Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH) and the faculty and staff of Greenport Union Free School District were excited to unveil a new Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) playground board at Greenport Junior Senior High School on Friday, September 6. This innovative tool, developed in collaboration with Smarty Symbols, supports the message that "Everyone has a Voice," offering an accessible way for individuals who face communication challenges to interact more easily.

The AAC board provides essential support for those who are non-verbal, have communication disabilities, or face language barriers by using visual symbols to bridge communication gaps. Catherine Bosco, a Southold community member, Psychiatric Nurse Manager at SBELIH, and mother of a non-verbal child, championed this project. "As a mother, I know how crucial it is to give every child the means to express themselves, regardless of their communication abilities," said Catherine.

SBELIH’s marketing team collaborated with Catherine to fund this initiative, reinforcing the hospital’s dedication to inclusivity and community engagement. By offering a visual language, the AAC board fosters better interaction, play, and understanding for children and adults alike.

Smarty Symbols is a leader in visual communication tools, empowering individuals with speech and language difficulties to express their needs, thoughts, and feelings.

“This is a full-circle moment for me,” reflects Catherine Bosco, RN, BSN, MSN, PMH-BC, as she steps into her new role at SBELIH as the Psychiatric Nurse Manager. “I began my journey here as the Charge Nurse in the Psychiatric Unit, where I played a key role in onboarding and educating new staff. My next chapter took me to the role of Behavioral Health Nurse Educator, overseeing patient and clinical education across all three of our Behavioral Health Units. All of these experiences have led me back to the Psychiatric Unit this summer, now as the Psychiatric Nurse Manager.”

In her new position, Catherine serves as the crucial link between Stony Brook University Hospital and SBELIH’s psychiatric teams, fostering a collaborative culture among the nursing staff on the floor. She explains, “Our unit is quite unique. Patients follow a very regimented schedule, which keeps our staff constantly engaged. Every day, I meet with nurses, social workers, and psychiatrists to develop care plans tailored to each patient.”

Catherine’s passion for her field is unmistakable as she shares, “I’ve always loved psychiatric nursing. It’s a challenging specialty that requires a unique skill set to truly support our patients. The psychiatric experience allows us to see and care for the whole person.”

Currently, Catherine is focused on streamlining the unit and introducing new procedures and policies designed to support both the staff and patients. “My goal is to cultivate a productive and inclusive environment where every team member can thrive,” she says. “Our unit is a mix of disciplines—nurses, NA/PCTs, psychiatrists, social workers, behavioral health specialists, creative arts therapists—all working together to ensure a safe and productive atmosphere. The mutual respect among the staff is remarkable; they are truly exceptional individuals.”
