Snacks leftover from our November meeting become special treats for the local firehouse! Thanks to the Civic Engagement and Outreach Committee for the delicious edibles and for sharing them with our public servants.

We had a wonderful November business meeting. As our featured speaker, Jenny Lachesky shared stories of her grandmother’s life growing up in the Weir-Jordan House. There are many club projects on the November calendar as our five different committees plan and execute ways to serve our community. In addition, we have Ways and Means projects scheduled to help fund them. We’re staying busy!

Seven members of the Environment Committee recently gathered in the Latham Park neighborhood, for our first-ever storm drain-marking event. We were led by Samantha Brown, Public Education Coordinator in the City of Greensboro’s Water Resources Department.

Drain-marking is an ongoing program by the City of Greensboro’s Water Resources Department to remind residents that everything entering a storm drain flows unfiltered into the nearest stream, river or lake - and eventually into a drinking water reservoir. It’s vitally important to keep trash, oils, paints, pesticides and other chemicals from entering our storm drains, as polluted water is harmful to fish, wildlife and humans.

The group affixed 28 drain markers throughout Latham Park, removing leaves clogging storm drain entrances, and picking up trash along the way. More drain-marking events are planned for club members in the future.

Our Education Committee met to implement a new project - creating “Story bags” for kindergarteners at two local elementary schools. Story bags include a book with related items to make the stories more engaging. GWC members will read the books and share the characters for classes in the near future. We’ll have an upcoming report on how that goes, but we are sure the students and GWC readers will love the experience!

This week Story Walk is at Jones Elementary School. Since Jones is a Spanish Immersion Magnet school, they’ll appreciate that we provide the Spanish version of the same book, too! Students and staff will enjoy reading along while doing the activities on the pages. We’re also including photos of students at Guilford Elementary enjoying it last week. Story Walk stays at a location for a week before moving on to the next.

Our book selection is “Up, Down, and Around” by Katherine Ayres. It is created from pages of a book, displayed on signs for participants (usually children) to do activities while walking along and reading them.

If your organization is interested in hosting our StoryWalk®, please contact us at: [email protected] and someone will be in touch to add you to the schedule.

The General Federation of Woman’s Clubs (GFWC), our foundation base, aims to be a powerful voice for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. As a GFWC Signature Program, its goal is to increase awareness and help prevent the widespread occurrence of domestic and sexual violence abuse in communities across the nation. Since 2012, GFWC has offered scholarships for those impacted by intimate partner violence who are pursuing higher education.

Here is the shareable link to the application: https://www.gfwc.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/GFWC-Success-for-Survivors-Scholarship_2025.Current.pdf

There’s so much more to Maxie B's Bakery & Dessert Café than delicious baked goods!

Robin Davis, founder of Maxie B’s, shared her passion and commitment to environmental stewardship to a small group from GWC. As a small business owner, she chose to make conscious decisions in their daily operations that promote a better planet and lessens their carbon footprint. She practices what she preaches all the way from packaging decisions, efforts to compost and recycle as much as they can, using non-toxic cleaning supplies, 100% compostable items, HEPA-filtered hand dryers in the bathrooms, and LED lighting.

She chooses to shop local and bakes with as many organic ingredients as possible. She also shared her favorite vendors, products, and processes hoping that some of it may be helpful to us. She educates her employees with environmental practices in the bakery.

We also learned that Robin nurtures a certified wildlife habitat with a native plant garden. She offers a “planet lovers reward program” to her customers. We learned about native bees versus honey bees and bird-friendly coffee. She also believes in charitable giving – 2% goes to environmental and world causes. The more we learn about ways to help the environment, the more we can share our knowledge with others and make a difference, one step at a time!

Thank you to all who joined with us and others at the recent solidarity walk for Domestic Violence Awareness in downtown Greensboro.

It was a wonderful turn out by Greensboro Woman’s Club which didn’t go unnoticed. It meant a lot to the organizers to have our club’s support and presence for the walk. We also got a lot of love for our very own GWC-designed purple shirts promoting domestic violence awareness!

We greatly appreciate the consideration given by Bennett Uniform Manufacturing Company Inc., as they also wanted to show support for this important cause.

Hey local friends, there’s only one week left to order!

The Greensboro Woman’s Club is selling delicious Mrs. Pumpkin’s food items as a fundraiser! It’s a great way to stock your freezer, with all proceeds going right back into the Greensboro community through our service projects. Yes, that’s a yummy win-win for everyone. And we’re excited to partner with Mrs. Pumpkin’s - a local, veteran-owned company.

Let a club member know if you’d like to order a chicken pot pie (or baked spaghetti, cream cheese brownies, etc!)! The sale ends October 28, and the food will be delivered on Nov 9!

Every month a team from GWC volunteers at BackPack Beginnings. This month we sorted, counted, and bagged books (over 1000 books put into 262 bags) which will be distributed to local schools. With our remaining time, we helped sort food donations.

Members of the Greensboro Woman’s Club volunteered several shifts at the Greensboro Urban Ministry this week. We prepared the 2024 Honor Cards for distribution to sales locations and the Feast of Caring in November. Cards were counted, bundled, and put in bags for easy transport. All of the funds raised by sales of these cards will support those experiencing hunger and homelessness here in Greensboro. This year’s card was drawn by local artist Karla Taylor Designs.
