a daily summer 2024 - day 1

So technically it’s been summer break for 2 weeks now (and practically for more like 3 since my big 2 barely went to school that last week 🤪)…but Instagram has had to wait for the traditional first day of summer photo because we’ve had more important things to do (like learning how to have 4 kids at home all the time ❤️). I’ve put together a summer photo challenge shot list to help myself (and hopefully you too) bottle up the fun of summer through photos (if you don’t get my newsletter send me a message and I’ll send you the list). 9 more days of school left (although I’m confident my big 2 will peace out a few days early after testing is done). To anyone needing that extra motivation to finish the school year strong…I got nothing for you…except maybe don’t take it all too seriously. 🤪 And good news…it’s Tuesday already, so you’re 1/5 of the week finished!

Now let’s just all stare and dream about beautifully styled bathrooms and kitchens. 😍

Baby Pierce is giving me all the sleepy Monday vibes over here and I’m loving it!!! I just wish it were acceptable to take a nap this afternoon after waking up in the dark this morning to send kids off to school and remembering that daylight savings is really always felt on Monday, not Sunday. 😴 But I will forgive those dark mornings in the name of long sunny afternoons and evenings again!

A woman who walks among trees like they are people. Curious, devoted, inquisitive. Who walks among people like they are trees. Careful, reverent. Who listens to the words of a religion that isn’t hers and wonders how others find meaning. Who sees a stranger as someone who somebody loves. Who meets her own shadow and asks it what it needs to grow. A woman who looks into the bathroom mirror at a crowded bar one night after dancing for hours, who sees messy hair and tired eyes, lipstick teeth and sweat. Goodness, she is glowing. It never gets old…this gift of coming alongside of beautiful moments in your life. 10 weeks of sweet baby Colton! When asked what is the right time to schedule a newborn session….my answer will always be when it is right for YOU. Yes, we initially try for those first 10 days, but that’s just not always the right fit for everyone. And goodness…this 10 week mark is just as sweet. Still tiny, yet showing off their little personalities already. Still so sleepy and snuggly. It was the best day meeting this new family of 3!! More to come…

Do I have to live in Greensboro to be a part?

- Ideally, you should live in the triad area (somewhere between Greensboro, Winston Salem and High Point), but if traveling to Greensboro multiple times a year feels like something you are willing to do, then don’t let distance be a reason not to join!

Is there a cost to be a part of the team?

- Yes. The cost associated with being a member of the team goes directly towards your own personal senior session. But here’s the fun part…you were already planning to schedule your one of a kind senior session with me…now you can do that AND get all the extras of an amazing full year experience!

Currently holding my breath realizing my kids don’t have an official day off from school again until the END OF MARCH! It’s fine, it’s all going to be fine. Wrapping up our last long weekend for a while with a showing of Abominable (my choice actually because I’m basically a sucker for kids movies that are all about the characters finding their true selves even if that is through the help of mythical Yeti creatures 😭…my kids’ exact response “oh great…get ready for mom’s nightly cry!” 🤣). a personal project

Final post from this remarkable session…but I admit…I’m afraid to stop posting photos from this day because just like my family sessions where I get to help transport people back to the feeling of when your baby was all brand new or your toddler had the most squishy cheeks and lips or your independent 5 year old showed off all of their favorite jumps and tricks and incessantly carried around their favorite lovey or your senior shared their boldness and confidence and personal flair for what lies ahead…this 50 before 50 session came at the most perfect time for me and has brought out all the feelings. The start of a new year, the chance to prove to myself once again that I am capable and enough, the opportunity to set new goals and let go of old expectations, the gift of spending time with a soulful individual and timely conversation…so while this is my last social post of my time with Katie (and my pretending that I have any idea what photos are my actual favorites), I’m so grateful to get to return to these images again and again and remember the feeling of growing as a human because of connection with someone else, some place else…thank you for being a part of this series with me.

Spending a day with Katie is life giving. She is soulful and funny, intensely devoted to her family and to her therapy clients, a self-proclaimed thrift store gypsy who loves color and lives vivaciously into every aspect of her life. Her thoughtfulness and intentionality towards life is inspiring.

While we were planning for this session I asked what her favorite color is, she answered so honestly…”Red/orange- Historically, women have been deterred from being bold in their clothing choices. There can be concern - or even shame - attached to calling attention to oneself. Growing up a Southern debutante I felt culturally encouraged to blend in. When I wear bright colors I’m saying ‘I’m here, and I’m awfully loud.’” And well…this sort of became the theme for our session.

An over the top orange flowing gown…a glamorous hair and make up session…a mountain stream in the heart of a town that means so much to her…connection and conversation to selfishly fill up my own heart…and gorgeous images of this goddess to forever disprove her statement to me that she may not be right for this project because she is “truly awkward in photos” (clearly we all know this is not true). Even more to come…

I have always loved the process of aging and have never shied away from it. Turning 20 felt like a dream, turning 30 felt like I was a full fledged adult who understood the world better, turning 40 felt as though I finally understood myself in a way I never knew was possible. But so much can and will change in these next 10 years and I want to be a part of and celebrate it with strong and creative and soulful women who are willing to share their story and time with me...

Meet Lindsay. The first woman to be a part of this series with me. She just celebrated her 40th year of being an amazing human. She is a spouse, mother, creative and driven business woman, a remarkable friend. She is one of those people you are dying to know better the moment you meet her and then feel like one of the lucky ones to be called her friend. She’s always rocking a bold lip and uses fashion + design to reinvent herself in a million little ways. She’s not afraid to be herself. She has a fierce love for her family and friends and she shares it freely. When I began thinking about this project (2 years ago), I knew it needed a bold start…timing is everything and Lindsay’s birthday came at the perfect moment…I knew she would inspire me and also the rest of the 49 women left to photograph during these next few years.
