Do you recognize this extinct cephalopod?

Ammonites lived between 240-65 million years ago, ranging in size from a few millimeters in diameter to the size of a car. This fossil has a beautiful pattern made from the dividing sutures between the chambers of the shell. ๐Ÿš๐Ÿฆ‘๐ŸŒŠ

Anhydrite is formed by the precipitation of calcium sulfate from evaporation of seawater. When exposed to water over time, it alters into the more commonly found gypsum.

This jaw belonged to a Romanian cave bear, a species similar to the modern brown bear. These animals went extinct about 24,000 years ago due to last glacial maximum, commonly recognized as within the last ice age. ๐Ÿปโ›ฐ๏ธ๐ŸงŠ

Fossilization in ice occurs differently, as the original tissues of animals are more largely preserved, with the possibility of soft tissue remaining in rare cases.

This fossilized metatarsal and claw belonged to a Camarasaurus, an herbivorous sauropod that lived in the late Jurassic period. Due to their diet, the claws were likely used for digging or display. ๐Ÿฆ•โ›ฐ๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ

Ammolite comes from the fossilized shells of ammonites, which were ancient cephalopods. These shells are composed of aragonite and various proteins. Under millions of years of tectonic pressure, heat, and mineralization, aragonite and proteins alternate layers to provide the rainbow effect you see here. ๐Ÿš๐ŸŒˆโœจ

The Romanian cave bear lived approximately 28,000 to 130,000 years ago. Don't let this paw fool you, the bears were opportunistic omnivores that mostly maintained a vegetable diet.
