A Conversation on Gentrification & Black Unity Between Kwadjo Campbell and Langston Hughes by Kwadjo Campbell
Kwadjo Campbell:
In Charleston’s streets, where shadows meet,
Gentrification’s march, a steady beat.
The homes we knew, the lands we tilled,
Now echoes past, our dreams unfilled.
New faces, new places, rising high,
But where’s the heart, the soulful cry?
Our roots run deep, through soil and sand,
Yet progress sweeps away our land.
Langston Hughes:
I hear you, brother, in every stride,
A tale as old as time, our pride.
From Harlem's night to Charleston's day,
Our people's strength won’t fade away.
Let them build their towers tall,
But in our hearts, we stand, we call.
For unity, for strength, for all to see,
The spirit of our ancestry.
Kwadjo Campbell:
Black unity, our fortress strong,
Together, we’ve endured so long.
In every brick they lay, we find,
A reason to unite, a common mind.
We’ll teach our children, lift our voice,
In unity, we make our choice.
To stay, to fight, to love, to heal,
To keep our heritage, our spirit real.
Langston Hughes:
Lift every voice, let’s sing our song,
For justice, for the right, against the wrong.
Gentrification’s grip may feel so tight,
But we’ve got soul, and we’ve got might.
In South Carolina’s sweltering sun,
We’ll rise as one, we’ve just begun.
Black unity, our guiding light,
Through darkest day, through longest night.
Kwadjo Campbell:
So let them come with plans in hand,
We’ll plant our feet, reclaim our land.
With every step, with every breath,
We honor those who fought ‘til death.
Langston Hughes:
In unity, we find our way,
Tomorrow’s dawn, a brighter day.
Black hearts, black minds, black hands unite,
Then and Now, Black Folk, keep up the fight.
Thanks and Shout Out to Rodney Mcfadden for inviting me to be the speaker at yesterdays Juneteenth Event in Greenville yesterday. Chucktown was in the house!
My message was Black Unity and Solidarity. Without it, economic and political power are only dreams in our head. Without it, our sons and daughters will face the darkestest of days ahead. Do it now, before the Opportunity to fight back is dead. Every group is is uniting around their culture- Whites, Asians, Indians- We must do so as well. Time will tell, head my advice or subject your decedants to hell.
