It’s science. 👩🏽‍🔬

In a study published in the 12/2020 edition of the medical journal Nutrients, a team of Emory research doctors showed a positive causative correlation between a subject’s mood and the tidiness of their environment. 🧹

It’s kinda common sense that we’ll be happier if we are in a clean space, but it’s nice to be able to say “science proves it,” too! 🤩

                 

One way to increase the overall cleanliness of your entire home is to start with the kitchen. Load the dishwasher, wipe down the counters, sweep and mop the floor.

Kitchens are the most used and — sad but true— most unsanitary places in the home. They also tend to take the longest to clean AND need the most frequent cleaning.

However, by cleaning your kitchen at least once a day, you can more effectively foster a cleaner environment for the rest of the home. It’s kind of like those cornerstone habits — make your bed in the morning; feel more productive the rest of the day, right?

For many families, the kitchen is the same way. And to really bust your game up a notch, give every member of the family a responsibility in the kitchen, or a day when they are responsible for making the kitchen shine.

If you have, I have an important message for you.

Are you seeing flashy ads for a WHOLE HOME CLEAN FOR $19 or "I FIRED MY CLEANING LADY AFTER TRYING THIS COMPANY!" or similar?

These ads are only partially legit. Yes, you may get a cheap introductory cleaning, but then they snag you into high-priced contracts.

More unsettling is the fact that these companies pay their workers abysmally low wages and do not hire based on values. Many of them don't even background check their team members. Often, they recruit 1099 contractors en masse from staffing agencies, which may produce hires that are not culturally aligned.

I'm not here to pan most cleaning companies in Greenville and the surrounding area. I love them and refer clients to them when my team can't serve them.

But there are warning signs to watch out for when you hire a cleaning company off of a too-good-to-be-true ad on Instagram.

Caveat emptor. Soapbox, dismount. Thanks. Love you.

Sofa tricks 🛋️
1. Vacuum your sofa every week, depending on how often it is used and pet presence in the home.
2. If your sofa is upholstered, use an upholstery steam cleaner on it at least once a monthly especially if pets use it.
3. If you have a leather or faux leather sofa, be sure to keep it conditioned using a product like Weiman Leather Cleaner & Conditioner or using a 1:1 water/vinegar solution.

Sofas are popular places to relax, nap, chill, or doomscroll Instagram and TikTok. Make it clean. 🧼😊

Kind of anticlimactic, right? Even though it’s one of those routine chores, sleeping in fresh set of sheets is surprisingly refreshing, restorative, and just feels so dang good.

But here’s the thing. Americans change their sheets every 23 days, according to a study by Mattress Advisor.

Maybe that’s OK, especially if you are showering right before bed. But, otherwise — that’s kind of a long time, no?

Want more interesting statistics from the study?
- Those identifying as men change their sheets every 29 days, and those identifying as women change their sheets every 19 days. No data was available for individuals identifying as nonbinary.
- Single people change their sheets every 37 days.
- People in relationships change their sheets every 19 days. We’re assuming they sleep in the same bed, but the study didn’t say.
- Those who sleep naked and don’t shower before bed go, on average, 19 days before changing their sheets.

Zero judgment. But here’s the tip: change the sheets on your bed today; sleep better tonight.
