PROTEST MARCH: Greenville County group demands change, end to police violence Efia Nwangaza organized the protest in Downtown Greenville.
JOIN GVL 25th Annual Protest Against Police Brutality Thurs, October 22nd, 10:00am, Solicitor's Office
Concerned Citizens Urged to Wear Black October 22, and face covering
A diverse group of family members and supporters of people killed by law enforcement will
observe the 25th anniversary of the National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation (NDP) beginning at
10;00am with "Jail Killer Kops," Press Conference at Office of Solicitor Walt Wilkins,
10:30am Start Day long Picket and Vigil at Greenville County Courthouse (305 E. North St)
5:00pm Rally and Justice-Memorial Walk to Greenville Law Enforcement Center
25 Years, 25,000 Stolen Lives! Times UP! Fight Back, Wear Black on October 22nd!!!
The protest is a part of a variety of events taking place throughout the country, October22.org.
"It is coming days before the presidential elections on November 3 and in the midst of the largest mass uprisings against police brutality and racial inequity this country has seen in decades,” said Efia Nwangaza. Ms. Nwangaza, Founder/Director Malcolm X Center for Human Rights is an attorney, Civil Rights Movement veteran, and lifelong human rights advocate recognized by Amnesty International-USA. She has served impacted families locally and nationally, along with appearances before U.S. Congressional and UN Human Rights Committees.
The Minneapolis police murder of George Floyd, May 25, set off an explosion of protests that have touched every state in the U.S. Despite the overwhelmingly peaceful nature of a vast majority of these protests, the response, both official and unofficial, has been heavily militarized and violent.
“People are sick of seeing police who kill with impunity, the racist expansion of mass incarceration, and the lack of funding for areas that can really help build safe and healthy communities: healthcare, education, housing, public transportation, clean air and water, and access to wifi and technology,” said Andrea Miller, a representative of the Upstate Defund the Police, Invest In People Coalition and co-founder of Upstate Abolition Project, https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/news/
local/2020/07/17/upstate-blm-representatives-launch-new-effort-defund-police/5459444002/ .
The 2020 National Day of Protest has taken on a deeper meaning because the militarization, brutalization and killings by law enforcement across the nation has been intensified by the oppressive actions of right-wing terrorists against all people and especially people of color.
"It is imperative that we as Greenville residents speak against the tactics used by all forms of police and their deputized vigilantes nationwide," said Miller. "And we must stand in solidarity with the families that have been victimized by police by coming together and wearing black on October 22."
