2022 party rental outlook & tips:

The insurance market continues to harden (fewer carriers & higher premiums) for amusement & entertainment businesses. It would not be a surprise if the minimum premiums increase for the carriers that remain. Some GL carriers will not write in certain states like LA, FL, NY, NJ. If you are located in those states, expect rate increases (or higher minimum premiums) due to claims history in your respective state... even if you didn't have a claim.

Don't forget about your premium audits! For those that saw massive growth in 2021-- fantastic! Just remember to set aside some money to pay the audit premiums if you did better than initially projected. This will be in addition to your renewal premium. It's also important to note that your insurance is based on your sales revenue, not profit/loss. The audit is based on the performance of the business during your insurance policy term, not the 12 month calendar year.

Higher limits are becoming increasingly difficult & costly to obtain. If you need a $2 million per occurrence policy (or a $3 million aggregate), you should be fine -- but if you need significant limits on your Excess Liability/ Umbrella policy, be prepared for much higher premiums!

Commercial Auto (or Hired/Non-Owned Auto Liability) is becoming a requirement to operate in some public parks & schools. I have also seen requirements for sexual abuse/molestation coverage. Public entities are the #1 target for lawsuits and they a starting to expand some of their insurance requirements.

Cyber liability insurance remains relatively stable even with the surge in cyber attacks & ransoms in 2021. Hot take: If you don't have cyber coverage in today's digital environment I truly believe you are doing your business a disservice. You'd be surprised how inexpensive these policies can be.

Tips for 2022:
1. Start on your insurance renewal 60 days from your expiration date. Gather your supporting documents like Profit/Loss statements or a sales report from your software system (ERS / IO/ BCN). Update your inventory list, if necessary. If your mailing and/or storage location has changed, be sure to let your agent know!

2. DO NOT FORGET ABOUT ACCIDENT INSURANCE. If someone is accidentally injured on your equipment, don't wait for them to sue you. Let your insurance agent know as soon as you know someone was injured. Usually there is a time limit (90 days from the accident) to file the accident claim. Filing an accident claim will not impact your general liability loss history (other than drastically reduce the chance of a GL claim). It is a reimbursement policy, so the claimant does not "profit" from an injury.

3. Get rental software. There are so many benefits beyond being able to run a sales report. Whether it's Event Rental Systems, Inc., InflatableOffice, or Bouncy Castle Network - the customers with rental software tend to be more successful.

4. Commit to building or improving your website, Social Media, & SEO. ERS/IO/BCN all have out-of-the-box templates with their software. Other add-ons like Event Hawk will help convert the traffic going to your website. There are quite a few web developers in these groups to assist with SEO and tweaks to your website.

5. Make sure your training is DOCUMENTED! There are online certification courses you can take like SIOTO. Insurance carriers love training for the owner & employees. But don't forget to provide a safety checklist/ rules/ training for your customers that they must sign.

6. Take pictures of your setups (before & after). Require your renters to mark their utility/sprinkler lines prior to your arrival. If you are setting up at any event that is NOT a backyard birthday party (corporate, church, festivals, etc) -- make sure your waiver & rules are posted in front of your equipment.

7. Reach out to your insurance agent BEFORE you buy new inventory. Your insurance carrier may not insure the equipment you just purchased.

8. If you subcontract equipment from another company, make sure you are getting a certificate of insurance (& endorsement) naming your business as an additional insured. Remember that the person/company that owns the equipment should be setting it up & operating it. There should also be a written contract in place with the other company.
