On August 1, 1920, a little boy was born in a small house on a steep hillside above the “big bend” of the Clinch River near the Hancock and Hawkins County line. His parents, Charlie and Ollie Ramey named him Harley. He was their fourth son of a family that would eventually include another boy, two more girls, and a baby boy (Herschel, Ralph, Jeffie, Harley, DH, Bea, Chloe, and CJ).

He grew up there and worked dawn to dusk for 50 cents a day during the Great Depression. He found relief serving in The New Deal program called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), where his starting pay was $30 per month. He was drafted into the United States Army in early 1942 at the outbreak of World War II, and served until 1946.

He was saved at Wallens Bend Baptist Church as a young man of 15, and was Sunday School Superintendent in the late 40’s at Union Chapel Baptist Church. He announced his calling to preach there in December 1951.

Until his death in June 1994, he organized and pastored many church’s in the mountains of East Tennessee, including: Liberty Hill Baptist, Mt. Carmel Baptist, Compromise Baptist (named for the community where it was located), Dutch Valley Missionary Baptist, Belleview Baptist, Pilot Mountain Baptist, and finally, Old Fashioned Gallagher Road Baptist.

He was the young preachers’ best friend, and many preached their first sermon in his pulpit. He was a constant witness for Christ, never met a stranger, and always had an encouraging word.

His body now lies on a windy hill overlooking the Clinch River empty into the Tennessee; along side Mamaw, my Daddy, and my baby sister.

He would have been 104 today.

He was my Papaw.

Just got the news that my great uncle Burl Kanipes crossed the river yesterday morning to forever rest under the shade of the trees.

He was my Mamaw Smith’s younger half brother, and is the last of his siblings to go be with the Lord. He lived most of his adult life in Chattanooga. Not sure if he had his birthday this year yet or not so he was either 88 or 89.

This photo shows Uncle Burl as I will always remember him – standing tall, strong, and calm in his Vols cap, like a live oak tree by the river.

He worked hard all his life and was a rock of stability for our family. He was always so generous and kind.

Every time I saw him when I was in college and law school, he would quietly call me aside and humbly ask if I needed any money. He’d say: “I know your school bill has to be high so you’ll make me mad if you won’t let me help if you need it.”

When he laughed, he did so with his whole body and it was a joyful thing to see. His eyes would dance with delight; and he would move his mouth as if chewing on something, as his body shook with glee.

My Uncle Burl was a great American.

I miss him already.
