Today is the shortest day and the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere, also known as the Yule Winter Solstice. Celebrated on December 21st each year, the Winter Solstice symbolizes the beginning of a new season and marks the start of increasing daily sunlight. The holiday celebrates brighter days ahead - both literally and figuratively.

Researchers believe the Yule celebration comes from the old Norse jól and Old English géohol, which celebrated the hunting season following the end of the harvest. Then, during the Middle Ages, Yule celebrations were adapted and reformulated into Christmas celebrations. The first recorded use of the term Yuletide dates back to 1475.

According to researchers, the Yuletide season would often span the end of November to the beginning of January. However, the feast of the Yule occurred for three days over the Winter Solstice and marked the start of a new year. Although Yule and Yuletide celebrations varied, some popular ways to celebrate included caroling, burning a yule log, enjoying large feasts, toasting and drinking, and decorating evergreen trees. In fact, historians believe that the story of Santa Claus delivering gifts from his chariot in the sky is rooted in an ancient Germanic celebration known as "the wild hunt."

With the beginning of winter and longer days for all of us in the Northern hemisphere, we can each embrace the start of a new season. We can celebrate the exciting anticipation of a brighter tomorrow and the strength found in unity. Let us continue working together to write a new chapter filled with shared accomplishments.
