The Greenville Police Department Provides Update on Haywood Mall Incident An event on August 5th at Haywood Mall created a wave of fear and uncertainty among shoppers and visitors. The Greenville Police Department was quick to address the situation and wishes to provide an updated account to the public to ensure the dissemination of correct information. At around 6:10 pm on August 6th, a police officer stationed at Haywood Mall noticed a crowd of people rushing away from the mall. The officer acted swiftly, investigating the scene while simultaneously calling for backup. As a safety measure, Haywood Mall was cleared out, and all shops were temporarily shut down to guarantee the safety of all individuals present. The Greenville Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, worked diligently to evaluate the situation and reestablish normalcy. After an in-depth review of video footage and testimonies from eyewitnesses, it was concluded that the cause of the panic stemmed from two juveniles popping balloons inside the mall. There were no gunshots fired during this incident, and there was no direct threat to public safety. The Greenville Police Department has identified and charged two juveniles, ages 13 and 15, with breach of peace, high and aggravated. Their actions, though they may seem harmless, caused a significant disturbance in the community. Such a serious lapse in judgment compromises public safety and puts undue pressure on crucial emergency resources. Regrettably, despite the clear evidence, there are still individuals circulating false information about gunshots being fired at Haywood Mall. We would like to underline that these allegations are completely unfounded, and we assure the public that no shots were fired during this incident. We express our deepest appreciation to the many law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel, specifically the Greenville County Sheriffโ€™s Office, as well as other local and federal agencies who responded t

The Greenville Police Department is committed to hiring officers who reflect our community and is actively recruiting candidates this summer through its โ€œSee Yourself Hereโ€ campaign. The campaign includes new community outreach efforts, like the recent GPD Hiring Workshops. The workshops were designed to help prepare potential candidates for the police officer application process. At the workshop, participants learned about the process and were able to speak one-on-one with GPD recruiters in an informal setting. They also had a chance to practice the Physical Agility Test (PAT), which is the first test all applicants take after applying to GPD. Itโ€™s not too late to apply! Visit https://greenvillesc.gov/439/Become-a-Police-Officer to learn more. The application is open until August 27.
