Brookgreen Gardens Conservatory is progressing nicely!

At 23 years old, Hayden Duncan, has a relatively long history with Craig Gaulden Davis. He came to intern with us after his freshman year at University of Virginia and every summer and winter break since even through graduate school at Clemson University. We’ve seen Hayden excel through each stage of his training and after joining us full time in June 2023 has already become a licensed architect, completing the AREs and AXP hours in record time.

He is an accomplished designer and valuable team member.

We’re thrilled to have you and congratulations!

Congratulations, Scott, for being named an LE Fellow by Association for Learning Environments!

We are so proud to have a leader committed to making a lasting impact on student lives!

When Greene Finney Cauley requested a design for their new headquarters that would define their office culture, we knew we could help embody their brand in the architecture. They wanted a more traditional aesthetic to project their 25 years as trusted accountants, an environment to attract and retain talent, and location off the Swamp Rabbit Trail that maximized views to the wooded surroundings.

We love helping our small business clients take growth steps to build their future.

Welcome Omari!

Omari Watson joins CGD, returning to the Baltimore office after officially graduating with a Master of Architecture from University of Maryland College Park. Since studying architecture in high school, Omari has sought out many professional opportunities to advance his knowledge including working as a summer intern for us in 2023.

Omari is excited to start seeing his work go through the entire process from conceptual design through completion. After a recent elementary school visit, he was energized for K12 design and the opportunity to improve educational spaces for the next generation, and, fun fact, keeps a wall of inspirational quotes near his workspace to keep the positivity flowing.

We had the great privilege of hosting high school students last week who were interested in the field of architecture and interior design. These students from Christ Church Episcopal, Greenville High School, St. Josesph’s Catholic School, and Easley High School had an immersive experience, keeping a rigorous schedule all week, programmed by our to learn the many facets of the industry.

Shadowing various architects and interior designers, students learned about current projects, 3D modeling, programming, design processes, sustainability, and the path to licensure. They also were able to attend a construction site visit at Fountain In High School and a behind the scenes tour of Southern First Bank.

Lastly, they were given a collaborative assignment to design “A Library of the Future” and mentored through research and design activities to be showcased at the end of the week. The week culminated in a presentation of the group’s library design to the Greenville and Baltimore offices.

All reports say they were great presenters! Thanks for your interest in architecture and interior design and spending time with our team!

Kim has dedicated an impressive 39 years to Craig Gaulden Davis!💫🥂

Interviewed by the original three, Kirk, Earle, and Bill, Kim settled in to the ‘admin’ position in July 1985.

Corgis, cars, and vinyl, three of Kim’s classiest pastimes when she’s not keeping the office in line.

Thank you Kim for your many years of service!!!

Sometimes you have to wake up early for a pre-dawn slab pour.

Around five a.m. at Fountain Inn High School, a crew of 11 poured the foundation for a new 3,900 sf fine arts addition with 50 cubic yards of concrete.

This southern heat is not to be underestimated and we appreciate the guys getting up early and doing a fantastic job.

The master plan and conservatory are taking shape at Brookgreen Gardens!

The site is progressing - new wetland ponds are being excavated, concrete slab poured, and steel er****on has started.

You can see how the building will fit into the existing linear nature of the garden’s design.

Coming back for another CGD summer, join us as we welcome Merci back to the Baltimore office!

Since 2022, Merci has stepped in the realm of research to study the impact of historic building revitalization in Poland which published in January of this year.

We’re happy to have him back before he heads into his final year in the M.Arch program at the University of Maryland.

Today is a pivotal moment in our nation’s history that symbolizes freedom for so many Black Americans. We share this image for the ability of the arts to transcend barriers. As architects, we are committed to designing spaces that reflect and celebrate the rich diversity of our communities and designing spaces where inclusivity thrives.

This powerful sculpture of Harriet Tubman, A Journey to Freedom by Wesley Wofford, is on tour through several southern states this year. On display at Brookgreen Gardens this past January, the piece will return to South Carolina in September to the International African American Museum in Charleston.

More exciting news...

A summary of the Bethel-Hanberry Elementary School case study was published in the summer edition of Learning By Design magazine (p. 48).

Completed by James O’Connor, DBA, the Associate Dean of the Johnson College of Business and Economics at the University of South Carolina Upstate and Crystal Ball O’Connor, PhD, an education specialist and former school board member, the article describes the impact of the design on the teaching and learning environment after a comprehensive process of conducting interviews, distributing surveys, and analyzing academic data on the district and state levels.

We’re thankful this information is being disseminated and, hopefully, used as a tool and inspiration for designers and school districts to continue improving the learning environment.

To read the full case study go to cgdarch.com/knowledge.

We are so pleased to congratulate Jim Determan for being one of the inaugural architect recipients of the Icon in Design Education Award given by Learning By Design magazine and Tarkett. This award recognizes people who invest their time, knowledge, and passion in the impact of learning environments. Nothing more true could be said of Jim, who has dedicated his life’s work, as an architect, to designing learning environments that improve academic outcomes and the overall well-being of students.

After three decades, Jim continues to demonstrate his passion for the impact of design by spending his time thoughtfully and humanely designing award-winning learning environments, investing in Morgan State University students, and engaging in comprehensive, multi-disciplinary K12 research.

Read more about what accomplishments have earned Jim this recognition. See page 25 of Learning By Design’s summer edition. Link in bio.

Congratulations Jim!!!

Earlier this month, Renfrow Industrial moved into their new corporate headquarters where they will continue serving the industrial construction industry with excellence. This family-centered business set out to create a facility that will accommodate their growth, expand their community outreach, and be a point of pride for their employees.

Off of interstate 85, between Greenville and Spartanburg, you’ll see Renfrow-orange highlighted in the design. After over 30 years in business and now their sixth location, this new building will keep them ‘getting the job done’ for decades to come.

On this Earth Day, we are reminded to design for tomorrow. We strive to push the boundaries of sustainability and keep the environment at the forefront of our design.

We are inspired by clients who make it their mission to honor and protect the world we live in.

Top - JoAnn Leleck Elementary School in Montgomery County Public Schools will achieve net zero.

Middle - Furman University’s Hipp Hall was South Carolina’s first LEED Gold building.

Bottom - Our 1974 office on Washington Street was an earth shelter built into the hillside for energy efficiency. The second level was added in 1987.

Last Monday, an incredibly grateful and excited crowd broke ground on the new Pendleton High School in Anderson School District Four.

The school will support the rapid growth of the area while offering new varieties of learning space for the students and teachers.

Many thanks to the community that has worked so hard to make this project possible!
