Welcome to the Journalism and Mass Communication page, a place to connect with current JMC students, alumni and friends.
The Journalism and Mass Communication major provides career preparation through three concentrations: electronic media, journalism, and public relations. Along with instruction in foundational theoretical concepts, the department emphasizes practical application and experience in the following skill sets: writing, use of communications-related technology, journalistic principles, and public relati
Memory from the local news’ coverage of the solar eclipse six years ago. I’m sure neither Nate nor I would have predicted that this year he would be sitting in my former office getting ready to start his teaching career! So excited to have him share his professional knowledge and experiences with the journalism students at BJU.
Grad and long-time friend of our department, Stuart Epperson, passed away today. He was the co-founder of Salem Communications (Salem Media Group). He left a great legacy!

Welcome our newest summer intern, Jo Huebscher from Bob Jones University! WYFF News 4’s Gabrielle Komorowski and I so enjoyed studio time with her today!
Please be in prayer for the family of Brian Mullen. Brian was a grad of our department and a faithful friend and supporter. He has impacted so many lives and will be missed! We are thankful to know he is with his Savior, but the loss on earth is very real.
Great job, Collegian staff!
And we're already looking for new staff members for the fall. Let us know if you're interested in joining our award-winning staff. We have open positions in all areas: writers, copy editors, photographers, designers and web editors.

Mr. David Lurtey is pictured here with seniors Kaitlyn McNally and Jewel Schuurmans.
Congratulations to Kylie Lewis and Kayle Stevenson! Both girls received a $1,500 scholarship from the South Carolina Broadcasters Association.
We are thankful for SCBA and how they partner with our students.
While the students are cramming for finals, the faculty are celebrating a successful year together. So thankful for this group that God brought together for this year to help train students. Thankful for the way God gives unique gifts and abilities to each person and allows us the opportunity to share them with our students.
Happy faces = final PR proposals done!
So proud of these two teams in Com 321 Public Relations Writing. They’ve spent most of the semester working on proposals for two campus clients, researching, holding focus groups, writing questionnaires and planning strategies. Each team presented proposals to their clients this week! A great learning experience!
Students in Oral Communication for the Media practiced for their final project of the semester: Press Conferences.
This class gives the students opportunities to work on their communication skills for the media in many platforms. Some of their projects include radio and TV interviews, podcasts, vlogs, social media presence, and press conferences.
Congratulations to these seniors! They officially completed their Capstone course this morning. It has been a privilege to be part of their college education. We are praying for them as they all go their separate ways after graduation. Go and do big things and make us proud!
Students work on studio interviews in Oral Communication for the Media.
We love our students!
Students in Principles of Journalism spent the class hour applying their knowledge on broadcast leads to different story scenarios.
It’s harder than you think to write in short, simple sentences.
We had a great morning with a group of students joining us for Homeschool Connect. The students got to explore the different possibilities with a major in JMC. We also got to hear from a panel of grads who are working in a wide variety of careers. They offered insight from their experience as students and now as professionals.
Congratulations to these seniors for completing their senior defense in Capstone. What an exciting milestone for them. So proud of all of the work they have accomplished as students and now praying for them as they take next steps after graduation.
Check out today’s edition of The Collegian to see our newest faculty member. We are thankful that God brought Jennifer Miller to our department. She teaches Business Writing, Expository Writing, and Media Law and Ethics.
There were two evening shifts of the Christmas Broadcast after the BJU lighting ceremony. It was such fun to bring back all the Christmas festivities to campus. We are proud of all these Fundamentals of Broadcasting students.
The Fundamentals of Broadcasting students are thrilled to be able to have the Christmas broadcast again this year. The first shift at noon is over… but you can still come and watch another group of students at 7:00 in the Den tonight.

Tonight we were privileged to be part of the first induction ceremony for the BJU chapter of Lambda Pi Eta. This Communication national honor society is for those students that have declared a major in Communication, have a high GPA, and are in good standing with their University.
Congratulations to all the Communication and JMC students who were recognized this evening.
So proud of our graduate Emilee Nelson!
The rainy day didn’t stop us from having our fall picnic. It’s a busy time of the semester, so it was a perfect time for a cookout and fellowship with other students in our program. Two weeks until fall break - and these students are ready.
We were happy to have 2016 JMC grad Emilee Nelson back on campus this week! She spent time in The Den signing the autobiography of her grandfather Dr. Ed Nelson--a book that she helped craft from many hours of interviews with her grandfather over a year and a half. Dr. Nelson has been in ministry for over 70 years as a pastor, evangelist, educator, author and mentor, and his story is spiritually encouraging!
Emilee also spent time with our JMC students, speaking to Fundamentals of Broadcasting and Reporting classes, sharing her process of collaborating with her grandfather to create the book.
Both the print and audio versions of the book are available on Amazon and on www.ednelsonevangelistic.org.
Thanks, Emilee, for taking time to share with us. We're proud of you!
