Gateway House, Inc.

Gateway is the premier mental health resource for Greenville and surrounding communities. This can lead to transitional and supported independent employment.

At Gateway Clubhouse, which is the center point for all assistance and activities, participants are not called patients or clients; rather they are called members. Gateway serves more than 130 active members, with an average daily clubhouse attendance of close to 90, offering a variety of programs to help members develop social, educational and employment skills – and gain friends, opportunities a

We are thankful for having Clemson University School of Nursing come visit us this summer. Working side-by-side with members, the students are able to experience the Clubhouse Model and all that we do here at Gateway. They will be able to take this knowledge with them into the medical profession to help the fight against stigma.

Gateway has an established support system to help members who are pursuing their education goals. Whether their goals are to earn their GED, obtain a college degree, challenge their minds by pursuing self enrichment, or working to develop a life skill/trade, Gateway is prepared to ignite members in their motivation for learning. Gateway provides support through weekly meetings and dinners. This support is a great way for members to help each other by seeing that some of their fellow members have the same experiences as themselves.

Why is Gateway?

At Gateway we support each other through relationships and friendships. These friendships are created through socialization and having fun while working side by side. Our relationships with each other are helping us grow a community and better ourselves. This support system provided by the members and staff of Gateway is empowering. Through this empowerment confidence grows and allows us to do things we would have never believed we could have done. Thus, members are learning new languages, getting their GED, completing college, finding jobs, and living independently. All of these aspects of Gateway help us to be better involved in the community and to reach our personal goals.

We would like to introduce three of our newest members: Ely, Gemma, and Chase to the Gateway Clubhouse Community. They have chosen their units and have been hard at work, demonstrating their talents and skills. While exploring the different units in the Clubhouse, Ely said “I have never felt more free to be me.“ As Gemma found her role in the Kitchen Unit, she states "Everyone has been so warm and welcoming.” After working on several new projects in the Clerical Unit, Chase excitedly said “Today is the first day of the rest of my life."

Gateway would like to introduce our newest staff member, Montez. Growing up in a small town, access to mental health resources weren’t readily available. This made him want to have a career in the mental health field so he could give back to the community and help break the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Montez is a graduate of Morris College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology. When asked about his first impression of Gateway, he said, "This is the first setting where staff and members/people that we serve, welcomed me with open arms.” The Snack Bar is excited to welcome him into their unit.

Thomas had the opportunity to work in the kitchen unit, where he had an integral role in restructuring and developing Colleague Training materials. Annabel was able to work in the snackbar unit, specifically in the employment area collecting TE hours as well as supporting wage reporting. She was also invited to attend a community breakfast with legislators. Ashli worked closely with our director of development, supporting public relation opportunities as well as different activities in the community relations unit. She attended one of Gateway’s annual socials, where she was able to build relationships with members outside of the work ordered day. We appreciate you all and your hard work this semester and hope we have the opportunity to work together again.

Today we said “see you later" to the 11 colleagues who came to Gateway for Colleague Training. This group of colleagues came from Centralia, WA, San Diego, CA, and Jamaica, New York. While here, they had daily discussions on articles about the Clubhouse model and went on tours of some of our Transitional Employment Placements (TEP). Some of the members who live in Gateway housing even opened their doors and allowed colleagues to tour the inside of their apartment. The relationships built in the short 2 weeks of training will carry on for years to come. We wish them safe travels back to their respective Clubhouses.

Gateway would like to welcome 3 members into Gateway Housing. Callie, Patricia, and Caleb each received their keys to their new apartment. We could not be more excited for them to embark on this new chapter of independence. Patricia shared “I am very excited to finally have a place of my own”. Although this is not their first time living independently for all three members, we are proud to have them as part of the Gateway Housing Community where they can continue to thrive and grow. Their neighbors have welcomed them with open arms, and have already made plans to hang out with each other in the evenings and on the weekends.

Meet Chimere, Gateway House, Inc., Greenville SC, USA

“In 2005 my world became dark, confusing, and pointless in my eyes. I was so far gone I didn’t realize I was depressed. I lost my job and became homeless. I was depressed and suicidal.

But then I discovered Gateway. And it changed everything. I’ve never experienced anything like it. At Gateway you are seen as an individual, as a human being. You know you matter, and you are always wanted. There is no stigma at Gateway. There is caring and hope and dignity.

At Gateway I am surrounded by unique, intelligent individuals, and our diagnoses don’t define who we are.”

Rosa Parks, an American civil rights activist who refused to give up her seat on a public bus, became the face of the 1955-56 Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama. This ignited the civil rights movement in the United States. on 12/1/55, Parks, along with other black passengers, were asked to give up their seat for white passengers on the bus and stand for the remainder of their ride. Rosa Parks’ refusal to relinquish her seat resulted in her being arrested and fined $10 for the offense and $4 for court costs, neither of which she paid. This sparked a boycott of the municipal bus company that lasted 381 days. On 11/13/56, the U.S. Supreme Court declared the town’s segregated bus seating unconstitutional. A court order was served to integrate the buses on 12/20/56. For her role in igniting the successful campaign, Parks became known as the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement”.
