Styx released their "Grand Illusion" album on July 7, 1977. It was their 7th album, with 7 songs released on 7-7-77. "Grand Illusion" was the record that gave them the career boost they needed. Some people like to refer to the record as their 'lucky 7's' LP. Having been around at the time, we can say for sure that if there was any luck involved, it was minimal. There was an incredibly well promotion campaign put together by the bands new promotion director, Jim Cahill. The campaign changed the way many bands would promote their product in the coming years.

Besides the promo (never use the word hype) campaign, it was an incredible record.

Do you remember the first time you heard of Styx and was it because of this record?

Happy 46th Birthday to "Grand Illusion"!!! And yes, as we have stated on many occasions, everybody here at CRRK are huge fans of our friends in Styx!

Heart released their eighth studio LP, the self-titled "Heart" on July 6, 1985. The album continued the band's transition into mainstream rock, a genre that yielded the band its greatest commercial success. Marking the band's Capitol Records debut, it spent 92 weeks on the U.S. Billboard 200 and became the only Heart album so far to hit number one, reaching quintuple platinum status. It also yielded the first number-one single for the band, "These Dreams", along with four other hit singles: "What About Love", "Never", "Nothin' at All" and "If Looks Could Kill". The first three cuts also made the U.S. top ten.

Do you have a 'favorite' song off this record?

Happy 38th Birthday to Heart's "Heart" album!!!

On Feb. 17, 1976 the Eagles released "Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)" album. The record was a singles compilation album. As of November 2012, 29 million copies had been shipped in the US market. With an additional 13 million internationally, for a estimated total of 42 million as of 2020, it is the best selling album in music history. Second is Michael Jackson's Thriller and third is by the Eagles for Hotel California..

The number of records sold varies, as every "chart' has different numbers. We are not sure how many copies it has actually sold, but we do know it has sold, excuse the expression, a s**t load.

We have never been able to figure out why some people love the Eagles and others can't stand them.

We think they have recorded some great music.

Happy 46th Birthday to "Their Greatest Hits" by the Eagles!!!

…Long long time ago…

At 12:55am, Central Time, Feb.3, 1959, the plane departed, It was 63 years ago today.

The Winter Dance Party tour played at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA on the night of Feb. 2, 1959. The show featured The Big Bopper (JP Richardson), Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Dion.

The tour was having its problems. One of them was the distance between venues and the conditions prevalent aboard the poorly equipped tour buses adversely affected the performers. The heat on the bus had stopped working and many of the people on the bus had got sick. Frustrated by the conditions, Holly decided to charter a plane when they stopped for their performance in the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, to reach their next venue in Moorhead, Minnesota. Carroll Anderson, owner of the Surf Ballroom, chartered the plane from the Dwyer Flying Service to fly them to Fargo ND.

Richardson, who was affected by the flu, swapped places with Buddy Holly's bass player Waylon Jennings. Ritchie Valens, who had once had a fear of flying, asked Buddy Holly's guitarist Tommy Allsup for his seat on the plane. Allsup and Valens decided to toss a coin to decide. Bob Hale, a DJ with KRIB-AM, who was working the concert that night and flipped the coin in the ballroom's sidestage room shortly before the musicians departed for the airport. Valens won the coin toss for the seat on the flight.

Dion DiMucci (of Dion and the Belmonts fame) had been approached to join the flight, although it is unclear exactly when he was asked. Dion decided that since the $36 fare (equivalent to US $291.20 in 2018) equaled the monthly rent his parents paid for his childhood apartment, he could not justify the indulgence.

The chartered plane sat three passengers and the pilot. When Holly learned that Jennings was not going to fly, he said in jest, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." Jennings responded, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes," a humorous but ill-fated response that haunted Jennings for the rest of his life.

When the show ended, Carroll Anderson drove Holly, Valens, and Richardson to the airport. The plane departed from the ramp and taxied to then-Runway 17 at around 12:55 a.m. Central Time on Tuesday, February 3. The weather report indicated light snow with a ceiling of 3,000 feet (910 m) MSL and winds from 20 to 30 mph (32 to 48 km/h). Though there were indications of deteriorating weather along the route, the weather briefings Peterson received failed to relay the information.

Just after takeoff, Peterson became disoriented due to the unfamiliar way the aircraft's attitude indicator depicted pitch, combined with an inability to find a point of visual reference on a starless night with no visible lights on the ground and the inability to detect the horizon. He lost control of the plane. The plane hit the ground and the aircraft cartwheeled across a cornfield belonging to Albert Juhl. The plane was at a slight downward angle and banked heavily to the right when it struck the ground at around 170 mph (270 km/h). The plane appears to have crumpled and then skidded another 570 feet (170 m) across the frozen landscape before the broken wreckage came to rest against a wire fence at the edge of Juhl's property.

The plane wasn't reported missing until the next morning.

There were no survivors.

To many, it was the day the music died. At least that is what the song says. In reality, the music they had made has lived on. We all just wonder about the music they would have made had they survived.

"(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay" was released 54 years ago today, shortly after Otis Redding's tragic death. Now considered one of the most important songs in music history, the track was written by Otis and Steve Cropper and features fellow Stax musicians Booker T. & The M.G.s along with Isaac Hayes. The song went on to sell millions of copies and top the Billboard chart later that year. 🎶

Alan Parsons is celebrating his 73rd birthday today. In October 1967, at the age of 18, Parsons went to work as an assistant engineer at Abbey Road Studios, where he earned his first credit on The Beatles LP "Abbey Road". He became a regular at Abbey Road Studios, engineering such projects as Paul McCartney's "Wild Life" and "Red Rose Speedway", five albums by The Hollies, and Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon," for which he received his first Grammy Award nomination.

He was known for doing more than what would normally be considered the scope of a recording engineer's duties. He considered himself to be a recording director, likening his contribution to recordings to what Stanley Kubrick contributed to film. This is apparent in his work with Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat", where Parsons added the saxophone part and transformed the original folk concept into the jazz-influenced ballad that put Al Stewart onto the charts. It is also heard in Parsons' influence on The Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" and "The Air That I Breathe", sharp departures from their popular 1960s hits "Stay", "Just One Look", "Stop! Stop! Stop!" or "Bus Stop". Parsons was also known to have swapped shifts during the engineering of "Dark Side of the Moon" so he could work entirely on the project.

In 1975, he declined Pink Floyd's invitation to come back and work on the follow-up for "Dark Side," "Wish You Were Here," and instead initiated the The Alan Parsons Project with Eric Woolfson, whom he had met at Abbey Road. The Project consisted of a revolving group of studio musicians and vocalists. Unlike most rock groups, the Alan Parsons Project never performed live during its heyday, although it did release several music videos.

Alan is still active in the recording / production side of music today as well as performing live.

Happy Birthday Alan!!! Very impressive.

Frank Zappa left us 28 years ago today on Dec. 4th of 1993.

There are those who think his music was 'silly'. To those people we can only say Frank taught / challenged so many to be creative. His influence will probably never be totally understood.

What is your favorite work by Frank?

RIP Frank. Thank you on so many levels.

20 years ago we lost Tom’s beloved friend George Harrison . Thinking of him and his family today.

11/27/2021

George Harrison released the LP "All Things Must Pass" on Nov. 27, 1970. "All Things Must Pass" was a triple album recorded and released in 1970. The album was Harrison's first solo work since the break-up of the Beatles in April of that year, and his third solo album overall. It included the hit singles "My Sweet Lord" and "What Is Life." The record introduced Harrison's signature sound, the slide guitar, and the spiritual themes that would be present throughout his subsequent solo work.

Among the large cast of backing musicians were Eric Clapton and Delaney & Bonnie's Friends band – three of whom formed Derek and the Dominos with Clapton during the recording – as well as Ringo Starr, Gary Wright, Preston, Klaus Voormann, John Barham, Badfinger and Pete Drake. The sessions produced a double album's worth of extra material, most of which remains unissued.

The record was critically and commercially successful on release, with long stays at number 1 on charts around the world. "All Things Must Pass" is "generally rated" as the best of all the former Beatles' solo albums.

Do you remember how you felt when you heard this album?

Happy 51st Birthday to "All Things Must Pass"!!!
