Meet Ben Ramsey, MD, the newest orthopedic spine surgeon to join Bon Secours Piedmont Orthopaedics!
Dr. Ramsey chose orthopedic surgery because of his “love of the procedures as well as the ability to impact patients' lives quickly and dramatically.” He was particularly drawn to spine surgery, as it offers the unique opportunity to deliver immediate pain relief to patients, allowing many to wake up from surgery with their pain significantly reduced or completely gone. “The most rewarding aspect of spine surgery is the ability to perform a surgery on a patient, and they literally wake up from surgery with their pain gone,” Dr. Ramsey shares.
Trained in all aspects of comprehensive spinal care, Dr. Ramsey is prepared to handle a wide range of conditions. Patients typically seek his expertise for issues such as neck or back pain that radiates into the extremities and challenges with balance, coordination, or dexterity. His approach to care emphasizes patient education, as he believes that understanding one’s diagnosis and treatment options is a key component of the healing process. “Patients often feel helpless when they are experiencing pain. This is not only because of the physical suffering but also because of confusion about their diagnosis and the fear of the unknown. Education is the foundation of the partnership,” Dr. Ramsey explains.
Outside of his medical career, Dr. Ramsey enjoys spending time with his family, engaging in outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing, playing tennis and being actively involved in his church.

Because of your generosity, the 5th annual Bourbon for B***s event was a huge success, outraising last year’s event with more than $120,000 raised for the Pearlie Harris Center for Breast Health. The money will help underserved women access the screening and diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds and breast MRIs they need.
Bourbon for B***s was founded by Melissa Morrell in honor of her mother, Sammie Sweeney-Ferrigan, who fought stage 4 breast cancer for six years before succumbing to the disease. In their honor and due to their ongoing support for others facing a battle with cancer, the lobby of the breast center will now feature a permanent tribute to Sammie Sweeney-Ferrigan.
Thanks to everyone who volunteered, donated, sponsored, or attended this year’s event and helped us reach our fundraising goal! We’re already planning for the 6th annual Bourbon for B***s. Mark your calendars for October 23, 2025!

“It’s amazing that it’s such a sophisticated piece of equipment, even though it’s still on a mobile bus. It was able to detect even a small nodule as mine was. I’m sure it saved my life. Had the bus not been there, knowing me, I would not have gone back for another three, four, maybe even five years. I know I wouldn’t have.” Susie Canfield shares how a mammogram screening with the Bon Secours St. Francis Mobile Mammography Unit led to the early detection of a breast cancer diagnosis. Read her story at the link in the comments.
