Happy Birthday to Cherry On Top!! Today is the one year anniversary of our Grand Opening. What a year it has been! We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when we decided to open in the middle of spring break 2023, but we sure are thankful for that crazy season and for all of the beautiful people in our lives who have supported us throughout this first year. THANK YOU!!! Today we want to give an extra special thanks to our very first customer, Zoe! We still have the first dollar bill that we made from her and it will be framed and hanging in our shop. We are so glad that we have pictures of that first scoop and her purchase! Zoe, thank you so much for supporting our business and our family! You are a blessing!

🚨Just a little public service announcement, due to the construction of the new Embassy suites convention center across the street, 1st Avenue will be shut down for a couple of days. But no worries! You can still access Cherry On Top and the parking lot from 2nd avenue.🚨 We can’t wait to serve you something yummy!

Attention visitors!! A word from the Shrimpfest team:
The 50th Annual National Shrimp Festival will now open at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2023 instead of 10 am, as was originally planned. The delay is due to severe weather forecasts for Wednesday afternoon which will hamper the setup.

High winds and rain exceeding 2 inches are expected. These conditions make it unsafe for vendors to setup. The decision aims to keep everyone safe during the setup process.

Starting Thursday afternoon, the weather is expected to improve. Organizers are optimistic about the milestone weekend for the Gulf Coast. The festival is free to attend and further details can be found on myshrimpfest.com.

What’s better on a cloudy fall day than a drive down a country road? I’ll tell you what’s better… today’s FLAVOR OF THE DAY shake in hand while you’re doing it! Introducing the “Bama Backroad” shake at Cherry On Top. This is a secret recipe, but if you enjoy chocolate, peanut butter, ice cream sandwiches, Oreos, and fudge, then this is the shake for you!

The Praline Dream is our flavor of the day! Butter pecan ice cream, praline candy pieces, gooey salted caramel, topped off with whipped cream, a cherry, gold nuggets, and fresh pecans from our favorite local farmer, Underwood farms! Just ask for the flavor of the day and we will fix you up!

After our first (wonderful and BUSY) summer season at Cherry On Top, we are getting our bearings as we head into the fall season. As we reflect on all that we have to be grateful for, we want to say a massive THANK YOU to our summer staff, and ! These ladies were just such a blessing to our whole crew. If they didn’t each have such excellent college and career opportunities awaiting them this fall, we would have held onto them forever!! Thank you for all of the fun, your hard work, and the excellent service you provided to our summer guests! Y’all were ice cream slingin’ rock stars and you are missed!!

The summer season has come to an end and we are enjoying the relaxed shoulder season at Cherry On Top. Locals, it’s time to climb out of your summer cave and come get some ice cream! Don’t forget to mention that you are local for a special discount!

Friends and visitors to the Gulf Coast, please take a moment to read about our rip currents. We have had so many heart breaking losses recently due to rip currents along the gulf. Please educate yourselves and your families. Knowledge can literally save a precious life!

Reusing the Bay County sheriff’s photo. While you won’t be able to see the rip like this from the shore, there are things you can spot.

*Edit* this post was created during a dangerous rip current event when people ignored the water being closed to swimmers. Most of the time the beach will not look like this however, rips are just a way of water. Below is supposed to be information you can use while standing on the beach.

SPOTTING A RIP CURRENT
1. The U in the sand (red line on the beach). This U happens from sand being displaced due to the onshore flow of the water. The rip is usually on the downwind side of the U but can be perfectly straight out. That typically happens when the wind is directly onshore.

2. Look for deeper water. Note where the rips are typically deeper and the color of the water is darker. (Red Line pointed out)

3. Look for surf. Where the waves are breaking, the water is likely coming in or fighting the water that is coming out. This is usually where the shallower water is. (Yellow Lines)

4. Stand still and watch the water for 30 seconds. If you can visualize the water moving out and it lines up with a u in the sand, plus there isn’t any surf and the water is deeper than the surrounding water; you are likely looking at a rip. This water is not safe to get in even if you are an Olympic swimmer….

SURVIVAL OF A RIP IF CAUGHT
1. Don’t panic
2. Don’t panic
3. Don’t panic

4. Float as best you can, face the shore, and wave your arms for help.

5. Note the green arrows. You can escape a rip by swimming parallel to the shore in either direction (Green Lines). There are several getting-out points where you can get back to shore if you follow the surf (yellow lines back in).

6. Continue to not panic. If you can not escape the pull of the rip by swimming parallel to the shoreline… Let the rip take you out. When you feel you are no longer being pulled out, swim parallel and follow waves that are moving to the shore to get out safely. This is a lot of floating as rips can pull you out fairly quickly. Highlighting the importance of having a float with you if you plan on wading past waist deep.

SEEING SOMEONE IN A RIP
1. Call 911 and tell them what access you are at.
2. Try to get a nearby surfer/jet ski/boater's attention that someone needs help.
3. From the shore, shout directions of what way the person caught in the rip needs to swim to get out of the rip.

NEVER GET IN THE WATER TO HELP. WAIT FOR EMERGENCY RESPONDERS TO ARRIVE.
