Today was my son liams first day an it was awesome he started off a little ruff and scared but everyone was so good to him including Mr gruber his instructor was great with him would recommend to anyone willing to learn karate this is the place to be

Important Dates:
Friday Aug 16th - Sensei Carl Gruber is rewarding the students tomorrow with a movie night as a whole group before school resumes next week, for all their hard work during the summer. Each student will be bringing an ingredient to make their own trail mix.

Friday August 30th - No Classes (Labor Day Weekend)

Classes will resume September 4th with regular schedule and remember new student's 20 % percent discount if they sign up for classes for one month.
Students who have a gi (uniform) must be worn. Students can wear plain black or white shirt underneath the gi top or school shirt.

For anyone who doesn't know Grandmaster Mastrioanni, Sensei Steven Haiser and Stef Haiser from Honbu Dojo in NJ, where Sensei Carl Gruber came from and affiliated with their school have written a nice biography in his his honor.

When Shihan Chirico passed, Shihan Mastroianni stepped up to fill his role as head of ISR. In the last 4 years, he has presided over a resurgence in the style. He brought together ISR practitioners from around the country and was instrumental in the formation and direction of the ISR Honbu Dojo in Edison (In fact the "Honbu" was his idea. No one didn't even know what it meant and had to look it up!).

They say that the true mark of a leader is that they left the organization in a better position than they found it. That certainly holds true for Shihan. His commitment, energy and leadership certainly left the ISR system in a stronger and more vibrant position. For that, we and all ISR practitioners owe him our love, respect and gratitude.

Shihan left the system with strong leadership with Dr. Kevin Holton, 9th Dan taking over as the head of the system. Along with fellow 9th Dans Sensei Robert Hedesh and Sensei Charles Brown, we have a strong and experienced board to guide us forward. Each of these leaders has over 50 years in the arts and our system will continue to grow and succeed.

A biography of Shihan Mastroianni is in the dojo. We want to share it with you now.

November 4, 1943 - August 10, 2024

Shihan Frank Mastroianni started karate in 1966 as an Isshin Ryu student at The Judo and Karate Center in Cranford, NJ. His first instructor was Mel Cornin, a student of Shihan Don Nagle. Mr. Mastroianni was awarded the rank of Sho Dan in December 1968.

In January 1969, Shihan Ralph Chirico accepted Shihan Mastroianni as a student.

In 1970, Shihan Mastroianni moved to Brick, NJ. With the approval of Shihan Chirico, he began teaching Isshin Shorinji Ryu at several Judo dojos in the Brick and Toms River, New Jersey area.

In 1971, Shihan Mastroianni was promoted to San Dan by Shihan Chirico and Sensei Robert Murphy (Founder of Isshin Shorinji Ryu). As an adjunct member of the Physical Education faculty at Ocean County College, Shihan Mastroianni taught Isshin Shorinji Ryu from 1972-1976 at the college. During this time, he continued to travel to Shihan Chirico’s school to continue learning.

In 1976, Shihan Mastroianni began working in New York City and needed to curtail some of his karate activities. However, he maintained at least one dojo where he taught two to three times per week. His black belt students taught classes in his occasional absence. Now retired from the business world, Shihan Mastroianni continues to learn, teach, and train with his students in Toms River.

In November 2016, Shihan Chirico promoted Shihan Mastroianni to the rank of 9th Dan.

After the passing of Shihan Chirico, Shihan Mastroianni was recognized as a 10th Dan on April 2, 2023.

Morning of August 10th, Grandmaster Mastroianni passed on.

Before Grandmaster Chirico passed on, he had two of his highest-ranking black belts head of Isshin ShorinJi Ryu system in the East Coast of United States. Unfortunately, Grandmaster Mastrioanni passed on unexpectedly early this morning. Another legend / brother of the martial arts will be deeply missed. Sensei Carl Gruber has looked up to Grandmaster Chirico and Grandmaster Mastrioanni. Isshin ShorinJi Ryu is still in good hands with Dr. Holton who is the head of our system now. Out of respect to Grandmaster Mastrioanni, we will not have any kiai (shout/spirit) in the dojo for the entire week. Dr. Holton and I both feel that Grandmaster Mastrioanni would like us to go forward with the movie night on Friday. This movie night is to celebrate all the hard training throughout the summer. With that said we will be extending no kiai until Wednesday Aug 28th.

Structured class, encouraging, kids are well behaved.

Sensei is very knowledgeable and clearly has years of experience. This was a trial experience. We will have to give it another try to truly get the full experience.

As of Wednesday evening, Carlos has shown dedication and his hard work have paid off to earn his first promotion as a 7th kyu One Striper meaning white belt with yellow stripes at both ends of his obi (belt). Keep up with the hard work.

Sensei Gruber is truely an amazing person. Unlike most other schools who just want your money for a colorful belt, Sensei Gruber is dedicated to building a person's confidence while teaching them how to defend themselves both physically and mentally.
