Digital Saccharimeter Autopol 880 & 880T

Dual Wavelengths

The most important feature of the AUTOPOL® saccharimeter models IIZ, 880, and 880T is their ability to measure at two wavelengths: 589 nm and 880 nm (NIR). Select 589 nm for conventional analysis using chemicals or lead clarifiers or select 880 nm for polarimetric sugar measurements in the near-infrared (NIR). 880 nm is above the absorption level of most dark sugar factory solutions allowing measurement of filtered but non-lead clarified juices. The dark sample measurement bar gets darker in proportion to the darkness of the sample being measured. When the bar is completely dark the instrument has reached its measurement limit.

Principle of Operation – Measuring Proof Obscuration
Regulatory method – Standard measuring Alcohol Proof Testing – Vodka and similar products. Vodka is a mixture of alcohol and water. The density of water and alcohol are well known, so the user simply measures a sample in the density meter and the measurement display shows % ABV. Different countries use different scales and even different expressions of the same scale. AOAC ABV is used in the USA, OIML ABV is used in Europe, the UK uses Proof, Canada uses ABV, and the Japan Taxation Department uses AOAC Proof. API Gravity – Density Meter Application In the United States, API Gravities are usually determined at 60 ºF whereas in Europe and other parts of the world, it is more common to use 15 ºC and/or 20 ºC. The DDM 2911 Automatic Density Meter may be controlled to bring the petroleum product to any of these temperatures and make the required measurements. However, for the more viscous hydrocarbons, the density is often measured at some elevated temperature and this value is then used to mathematically correct back to the proper API Gravity value for the lower temperature. This mathematical calculation is done using Volume Correction Factors (VCF). Each different type of petroleum product group has a different VCF.

The historical method for the measurement of API Gravity has been the hydrometer. However, the low precision of the hydrometer as the prices of crude oils increase makes this method obsolete. Additionally, the large sample volume required, the large quantities of solvents needed for the cleaning of the hydrometer column, and the need for a dozen or more different hydrometers to cover the entire API range have made using this method completely impractical in today’s petroleum laboratories.

Liquid Urea-Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer analysis is performed quickly and easily with Rudolph’s 2 Instrument system.

Rudolph Research offers a more rapid, less complex UAN analysis method using concurrent Density and Refractive index measurements. The results yield a full analysis including the concentration of ammonium nitrate, and urea. Also included is a % of total nitrogen in the sample UAN solution. The advantages of using the Rudolph UAN measurement method are speed, safety, and a reduction of technical expertise required. No user interpretation is required and there is no unusual danger to the user. Accuracy is within the required results with up to 0.024% accuracy when using a Rudolph J457 Laboratory Refractometer and a DDM series Density meter. Reproducibility is improved over existing methods due to the reduced variables utilized in the Rudolph Method. Therefore, results are far less dependent upon user skill or procedure.

Laboratory Refractometer – J457

The Refractometer temperature boost – TB option has two effects:

• The maximum temperature of the refractometer is to be increased to 120°C for a period of 60 minutes. At the end of 60 minutes, the temperature control will shut off and the instrument will cool down to ambient temperature for a period of 1 hour.
• The minimum temperature is changed from 10°C to 5°C (note that the ambient limit still applies)
Digital Refractometer – J157, Versatile Refractometer – J257, Automatic Refractometer – J357
• The minimum temperature is changed from 10°C to 5°C (note that the ambient limit still applies)
• The maximum temperature is increased to that of the model above, for example, a J157WR-PLUS which normally stops at 85°C will go to 100°C (J257 temperature)

All AUTOPOL® saccharimeter models have a temperature probe in the measurement cell. The probe can be inserted into all 14 styles, 40T style, 41T style, and 33 style measurement cells.

The AUTOPOL® 880 displays the temperature source and type of correction. Utilizing factory-programmed temperature coefficients the AUTOPOL® 880 can make the following types of temperature corrections:

• A 30° C sucrose sample can be measured by the temperature probe and corrected to 20°C or 27.5°C or a customer-defined temperature.

• A 29°C sucrose sample in a Type 14 center-fill glass cell can be measured by the temperature probe inside the sample chamber and corrected to 20°C.

• A Quartz Plate measured at 25°C by the chamber temperature probe and then automatically corrected to 20°C.

The R837 is the only method-based autosampler solution in the marketplace that allows a different method for each rack section. The LoadAssist® is a Rudolph Exclusive sample loading option. There are two options for sample loading, by manual injection or having the PeriPump pull the syringe for you. This feature has no added benefit to measurement performance over the Horizontal Load for an experienced user. However, it benefits customers that have multiple inexperienced users as the PeriPump will automatically inject the sample the same way every time. Ideally, this can also be used for pulling the rinse solutions automatically into the system thus making the rinsing part of the operation much easier.

TTB reporting and compliance requires a highly accurate Density Meter such as the Rudolph DDM 2911 Plus. The instrument is approved by the US TTB and also used in their own laboratories for alcohol-proof testing. An Automatic Density Meter provides the easiest means to measure the density of an alcohol/water mixture. The Density Meter then also automatically converts this measurement into an alcohol concentration and Proof determination.

The DDM 2911 Plus is loaded for measurements by injecting a small 1 to 2-ml sample with a syringe. The temperature of this sample will be controlled automatically to within ±0.01 ºC of the required measurement temperature. The DDM 2911 Plus Density Meter will accurately measure the sample’s density and automatically perform the conversion of density to alcohol concentration using one or more of the officially recognized alcohol tables; most often OIML, AOAC, or IUPAC.
