In September 1990, Bo Jackson hit a hard one-hopper back at Nolan Ryan, and it hit Nolan in the face, causing a 2-inch gash in his lip that required six stitches. Despite the blood pouring, Nolan threw the ball to first and continued pitching without leaving the field. He didn’t even wipe the blood off his face! He ordered the trainer to stay in the dugout, threw seven innings of 1-run ball, and got his stitches after the game.

Nolan stated that the injury wasn’t a factor and emphasized the importance of putting aside any distractions during the game. According to him, hard work means persevering through any challenge, whether hurt or tired, for the benefit of the team and family.

This card is so rare that an “SGC 1” copy sold in August 2021 for a price of $28,800 — which is about 8X the price of a normal copy graded a “1”.
