Enjoy Life & Dont Forget to Stop & Smell the Candles Along the Way

Sometimes life just doesn’t turn out the way we plan. We can be happily motoring along, enjoying the view, singing along to music on the radio. Then, in what seems like a flash of a moment, our entire world gets turned upside down. I’m sure you have heard these stories before: The tragedy, the heartache, the loss. (I will spare you our torrid details for the sake of getting through this without tears and because we want you thinking happy thoughts when you light our candles.) I will say, it is in those difficult moments where we find our strength and our path to a greater destiny.

Now I’m not saying our great defining moment in life is making candles. That would be kind of silly, right? The outcome of our losses are, however, the reason that we find ourselves living happily here in Eden. Since there were no professional candle makers in Eden, we decided we should be the first!!

We started pouring in 2013. We told no one outside of our home what we doing. We poured and poured, sought out advice, tried every method we read about but nothing seemed to be working. Some candles just looked plain yucky. Some smelled great cold but threw no scent when it was burning. Some the wax wouldn’t melt or the wick wouldn’t stay lit and some just had no smell at all. Working with pure soy is a challenge we found. Many suggested we add paraffin or other ingredients to smooth out the soy and make them “pretty” or to add chemical to increase their scent, but we said no- we wanted them as pure as possible. We tried leaving them white so you couldn’t see the frosty appearance on the glass, but then we mixed them all up and couldn’t tell them apart before labeling. We tried all different rooms, different temperatures, different ingredients, different wicks. Ugh! We worked at them day in and day out - perfecting the process plus creating logos & labels. Finally after a full year, we presented our first finished product to family and friends...and they LOVED them!!

So basically, our candles underwent a similar process to our lives. They started off rough, bumpy and sometimes looked just plain ugly, until they finally accepted their path. Now they settle happily into a nice little container, and shine their warm fragrant light for others to enjoy. (And sometimes when we least expect it, they STILL will give us a hard time!)
