Lots of our clients have been told their pelvic floor is weak, but when we actually get to an assessment, we find a different story. Pelvic floor tightness and tenderness, hip muscle imbalances, and core strength and coordination often have much more impact than pelvic floor weakness. When the system works better, the pelvic floor has less compensations to keep up with, and thus has a greater chance to control bladder, bowel, and s*xual health.
So don't worry if you haven't been doing your kegels! Chances are they aren't the answer to your problem.

We can’t wait to help you feel better!
A 2018 research study shows that 95% of women with low back pain had some form of pelvic floor dysfunction. What does this mean?
If you have experienced low back pain in the past, there is a high likelihood that your pelvic floor system is involved. And if treatments like massage, chiropractic care, orthopedic physical therapy, or acupuncture haven’t fully resolved your symptoms, then the WHY behind your back pain is still out there.
We are huge fans of using a combination of treatments to help you feel better, and adding pelvic floor physical therapy to the mix can get you towards your goals of returning to the activities you love.

IT’S ALL CONNECTED!!
Low back pain, pelvic floor issues, hip pain, feeling like you’re tight all the time…they go hand in hand as your body makes different adaptations to deal with underlying issues like poor pressure control or hip and core weakness.
Good news for you: our pelvic floor therapists are specialized in helping you find the underlying reasons to your symptoms. That means you get symptoms relief + long term success 🤩🤩
Looking for the answers to your pain, injury, leaking, heaviness (or anything else you aren’t sure how to describe it)? Call us today and let us help you!
Why talk about a healthy, routine bowel movement? Because it is typically one of the common denominators when we work with our patients on pelvic floor challenges! Creating easy to pass, 1x/day (or more) bowel movements is way less work and stress through our system, which improves symptoms like pain, leakage, pressure or heaviness, bloat, and fatigue.
Have you tried these strategies when it comes to your 💩💩💩?
1. Utilize a squatty potty or a stool underneath your feet in order to relax the pelvic floor muscles and reduce the anorectal angle. In this squatting positing, stool can exit easier with less strain.
2. Move your body regularly! Aim for at least 30 min every day. Do something that you love to do and feels good in your body. Dancing, walking, hiking, biking, running, and yoga are all great examples of daily movement. This keeps the rib cage, thoracic spine and pelvis mobile, and when the body has more range of motion, stool can move through the system with more ease.
3. Assess your fluid and fiber intake. Drink water to thirst and aim for 25-35 grams of soluble and insoluble fiber daily.
4. Try an abdominal wall massage for 5 min daily. Going from the right side of the pelvis up to the right ribcage, across to the left side of the ribcage and then down to the left pelvic bone. Utilizing the massage in this direction follows the direction of your large intestine. This can sometimes stimulate peristalsis and get things moving!
5. Practice deeper breathing daily. 360 breathing involves sending the breath down to the belly and allowing the rib cage, and thoracic spine to expand while the pelvic floor muscles lengthen and relax. This technique is particularly helpful when trying to initiate a bowel movement with less stress/strain.

Stuck in your day to day battling urinary urgency, frequency and leaking? Start with a few strategies to reduce stress on your bladder and pelvic floor. Still not seeing enough change? Call your local pelvic floor therapy office to find the right treatment plan!
#1: make sure you are adequately hydrated with WATER! Everyone has a little bit different needs when it comes to how much water we should be drinking during the day. A good rule of thumb is anywhere from 6-8 glasses and then modifying based on your activity level, temperature, etc.
#2: limit "just in case" peeing. This tells your bladder to empty at small amounts when we don't have the urge to go. While this is fine ocassionally or with a few exceptions, if this becomes a habit it can cause the bladder to get extra sensitive to emptying at small amounts and it will give you more feelings of urgency/frequency or leaking.
#3: limited bladder irritants. These can differ from person to person. Some common bladder irritants include: carbonated beverages, alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, etc. If you notice that you are particularly sensitive to one or more of these irritants try to limit your consumption of them. A good rule of thumb is to get 2/3 of your daily fluid intake be just water and 1/3 can be "other".
#4: sit on the toilet to void and try to relax (not push) in order to get the urine out. Hovering over the toilet/pushing can cause more engagement of the pelvic floor muscles. If you have difficulty relaxing the pelvic floor try to take a few deep slow breathing focusing on the inhale to relax before beginning the urine stream.

Meet the owners of Regenerative Edge PT, Patrick and Courtney!
We are a husband and wife PT duo with a shared passion for helping others pursue the activities they love without pain or fear and with a deeper connection to their body for long term health.
