Good Evening Everyone. In an effort to add some transparency to some recent news, here are the actual facts. Starting Sunday night, Hamlin EMS will not be staffing a paid ambulance from the hours of 0000 to 0600. We will have a paid staff in house from 0600 to 0000 for 7-days a week. This is a necessity as we work through some necessary transitions in order to face some of our ever increasing challenges, challenges that every EMS agency has to face. However, as a Non-Profit 501c3, we are still a combination Paid and Volunteer agency. From 0000 to 0600 we will rely on our available and dedicated volunteers, who are already running with us on a daily basis.
As we work through this, our crews are still responding to calls when requested. Just as we did throughout COVID, and have through any natural disaster we’ve had. This is a great community and we are proud to continue to serve it.
Sometimes a simple quote doesn’t cut it. As we take time today to reflect on the sacrifices made on our behalf to remain free, I think Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is worth a read today.

The EMS Community is small. We all work with each other on a daily basis, and get to know each other from calls and at hospitals. Many of us have utilized Mercy Flight WNY in order to fly critically sick and injured patients to the hospital when seconds count. Our thoughts and prayers are with our friends and colleagues at Mercy Flight WNY.
Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society, also known as The White Paper, was written in 1966. The report showed data that said casualties on the battlefields of Vietnam had a better chance of survival than those injured in accidents on the freeway due to rapid treatment and transport to medical facilities. This paper would be the catalyst for the creation of the modern Emergency Medical System. And it was written during the presidency of Lyndon Baines “LBJ” Johnson, the 36th President of the United States.
Our second question of the day: An important factor in the creation of the modern ambulance service was a report that is commonly known as The White Paper. Who was the President when The White Paper was published? Answer will be revealed in a bit. Happy searching!
Alright…did you get our first question? If you answered William Henry Harrison, you were correct! William Henry Harrison was elected as the 9th President of the United States in 1841. Old Tippecanoe also holds the record for having the shortest term in office. He was only President for 31 days. Inagurated on March 4th, he died of Pneumonia on April 4, 1841.
President Harrison was enrolled in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, but dropped out of school to pursue a career in the military and politics. If you didn’t know…now you know.
Happy President’s Day! For today, a little trivia. Two separate questions. The prize: bragging rights.

NEW: Starting today, if you call 911 in Monroe County, you may not get an ambulance. The City/County/AMR are launching a nurse navigator program in an effort to ease pressure on EMS.
Calls to 911 for specific, non-life threatening injuries or illnesses will be routed to a New York-licensed nurse. The nurse assesses the caller’s symptoms and facilitates the most appropriate medical care, such as a virtual visit with an emergency physician or nurse, instructions on self-care, or transport to a local healthcare provider, including clinics, urgent care centers, or if needed, a hospital emergency department.
In memory of Monroe County native and Medal of Honor recipient Gary Beikirch who passed away this week, we’re flying our flag at half mast. Rest In Peace sir, and thank you for your service to our country, our community, and our veterans.
This evening we mourn the loss of Medal of Honor hero, Gary Beikirch, who passed away earlier today at the age of 74. “Gary was a true American hero. He displayed extraordinary courage on the battlefields of Vietnam and dedicated his life to encouraging and inspiring generations of Americans. As a counselor and man of deep faith, Gary touched and changed thousands of lives,” shared Chris Cassidy, President and CEO of the National Medal of Honor Museum. “The impact of his uplifting influence will be felt for years to come as his goodness lives on in those who knew him. We offer our deepest sympathies to his family as they, together with America and the Medal of Honor community, grieve an amazing man.”
Sgt. Beikirch, medical aidman, Detachment B-24, Company B, distinguished himself during the defense of Camp Dak Seang, earning the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. The allied defenders suffered a number of casualties as a result of an intense, devastating attack launched by the enemy from well-concealed positions surrounding the camp. Sgt. Beikirch, with complete disregard for his personal safety, moved unhesitatingly through the withering enemy fire to his fallen comrades, applied first aid to their wounds and assisted them to the medical aid station. When informed that a seriously injured American officer was lying in an exposed position, Sgt. Beikirch ran immediately through the hail of fire. Although he was wounded seriously by fragments from an exploding enemy mortar shell, Sgt. Beikirch carried the officer to a medical aid station. Ignoring his own serious injuries, Sgt. Beikirch left the relative safety of the medical bunker to search for and evacuate other men who had been injured. He was again wounded as he dragged a critically injured Vietnamese soldier to the medical bunker while simultaneously applying mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to sustain his life. Sgt. Beikirch again refused treatment and continued his search for other casualties until he collapsed. Only then did he permit himself to be treated. Sgt. Beikirch’s complete devotion to the welfare of his comrades, at the risk of his life are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the U.S. Army. With this heartbreaking loss, there are now only 66 Medal of Honor recipients living.
