It’s back to school time and whether you pack your child a lunch, they purchase hot lunch, or receive a lunch from the school, this is your reminder to prioritize fueling your SELF, too!

As parents, we often put ourselves last in the list of things to take care of in life. But at Mom Genes, we believe that caring for your body has a ripple effect on your mind, soul, self worth, and all your loved ones. Nourishment of the body is a key foundation to being able to nourish your whole self and those around you. So pack that lunch, throw those snacks in your purse, stop to pick up that meal, or sit in child free silence for a minute at your own kitchen table and fuel your self! You deserve it, too!

The other day I was taking selfies to send to my husband post-my sons nap as we were cuddling on the couch watching Little Bear - and my mind went to a mean place about how I looked.

I literally had to intentionally STOP my brain from spiraling towards criticism and remember WHY I took these photos in the first place.

1. My son looked so sweet and cuddly watching a show in his sleep sack. So innocent and pure.
2. To show my husband how cuddly he was being with me.
3. To remember the feeling of having my baby on my lap by choice, resting his head on me. The warmth and love I felt from him and for him in that moment. 🥺

That was the why.

Not to think my face looked like x, my chins looked like y, my hair looked greasy as hell, and the shirt I was wearing had stains on it….

Not. The. Point. ✋🏻🙉

Let’s try as women to be a little nicer to ourselves the next time we see photos of ourselves. We deserve that.

Share this with a friend who could use the reminder that they are worth capturing in photos 🫶🏻

TONIGHT ON : Nightline continues its mental health series “State of Mind,” which takes a deep-dive into various struggles faced by everyday Americans.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), nearly 30 million Americans will have an eating disorder in their lifetime, with men representing 25% of people diagnosed with anorexia.

ABC News' Ginger Zee has more on the impacts of disordered eating, how social media has amplified the situation for teens and shares a deeply personal story of her own struggles with food.

Teens say social media is stressing them out. Here's how to help them Many parents are worried about their kids losing themselves for hours on their phones. Turns out, teens are troubled too. But they also know a lot about how to get unhooked. Here's how they do it.

Opinion | Profiteering Off the Body Insecurity of Teens 05/23/2023

This is all too common. I have children as young as 8 years old, telling their peers they are on "diets" or need to "diet".

"...I met a 10-year-old boy who, after hearing from older kids at camp that he needed to build muscle if he wanted to be a good athlete, changed his diet by cutting out fats and adding protein. As his rigid food restrictions and nutrition worsened, his heart rate plummeted to 35 beats per minute. He ultimately needed to be admitted to the hospital to stay safe while undergoing nutritional rehabilitation." - Dr. Vargas

TODAY BEGINS Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) February 27 – March 5, 2023. As part of the Collective of Eating Disorders Organizations (CEDO), we are grateful for everyone who has helped us in making these events possible.

This year’s theme is “IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE.” We haven’t come this far only to come this far. By coming together, we will focus on the message that now is the time for more: more equity, inclusion, access, outreach, early intervention, education, representation, advocacy, and awareness.

Our communities deserve so much more; we are much stronger together. We look forward to having you join us during the events that MEDA has planned!

Be sure to sign up for these amazing events here today! https://lnkd.in/egUHCh6F 💓

The pressure for CHILDREN (these are young kids we are talking about, after all..) to perform at competitive, athletic, levels is un real!
middle schoolers and high schoolers are being expected to "train" and practice daily after a full day of school and manage additional games and competitions on the weekends that have them playing for up to 8hrs consecutively!
It is NOT okay to continue to condone excessive fitness in children !
There are real-life, physical and mental health consequences for these children as they age. One of them that often, it that is often not taken seriously enough is RED-S.

Have you ever heard of "relative energy deficiency in sport,” or RED-S?

🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ There are some choices that your Little doesn’t always get to make when it comes to mealtimes. As the parent you get to decide what to serve and when. As the child, they get to decide what to eat and how much of it they will eat. BUT that doesn’t mean there’s not room for ANY choices for your Little. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ Offering choices can be a great way to give your Little some sense of autonomy. BUT, we often recommend offering a closed set of choices. Meaning, offer a simple choice between 1-2 small parts of the meal instead of a question that allows limitless answers! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ This allows your child to have a sense of control while also allowing you to keep your meal plan intact. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤷‍♀️ You’re still going to have dinners where they ask for something else, but saying “that’s not on the menu tonight” let’s your Little know you hear them. You can then offer them a small choice that won’t interfere with the meal you’re already making (ranch or ketchup, blue plate or green plate, sandwich cut in half or quarters, etc.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
PS- this doesn’t mean that you can’t also include some preferred food items that you have on hand for a meal that your Little may not have picked. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁉️ What’s your favorite choice to offer up to your Little? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🚨 Looking for more tips? Be sure to check out our blog via the link in the bio! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

As a parent, when you hear your child is struggling with an eating disorder, the most important thing you want to know is :
"how can I help them?"

Providing support and coaching for ARFID recovery can look a lot different than it does with other eating disorders.

Here are my top 4 recommendations to helping your teen with ARFID:

1.) Make meal times consistent- Giving them predictable eating times and knowledge of the meal ahead of time reduces anxiety and helps promote hunger regulation.
2.) Give full permission to no like a food. If we create the dynamic that in order for a food to be safe to eat, we need to like it, they will continue to seek this marker out! It may be impossible for us to have a well balanced diet with only eating preferred foods!
3.) Start building their meals with what they already accept! Getting enough overall calories trumps getting those fruits and veggies in!
4.) Find support (I am pointing to you mamas!) and guidance from ARFID aware providers that can give you real-life tips, techniques and help. It is a stressful job to re-feed your child from home. Talking with other parents and having your own support team is a must!
