Living in A Loft: Remaking a residential apartment that preserves a sense of lofty expanse, and fulfills the occupantsâ requests for a functional family home, and artists workspaces for a sculpture and a printmaker, inspired a reinterpretation of the traditional courtyard house. The project arranges two large habitable forms, at each each of a rectangular space, elaborated by variation, and a large âopenâ space at the center, beneath a dramatic barrel-vaulted brick ceiling. Architectural insertions create space for a central entryway connecting to either new artist studio, and separately, to a piazza- like open space for living and dining, which incorporates a large kitchen, bathroom, storage, and other amenities. Nestled at back, space is created for two large bedrooms, a large bathroom, storage, and laundry facilities, accessible through a spacious antechamber. Throughout, incised doorways, cabinets, and transparencies are framed and covered in honey-colored wood, creating transitive surfaces around corners and across edges, echoing the planar inflections of the architecture, and lighting sources, set against the hefty brick ceiling and hardwood flooring, introduces a sense of delicacy and hand craftsmanship.
The Wellington Arts Center Master Plan in Palm Beach, Florida was commissioned by the Wellington Cultural Trust and entrusted to the expertise of George Ranalli Architect. The project involved master planning for the municipal arts complex, nestled on a picturesque 10-acre site, featuring a gradual slope leading to a magnificent 99-acre lake on one end and public hiking trails on the other. The initial assessment encompassed a comprehensive range of factors essential for determining the feasibility of creating a large facility aimed at enriching the community, spanning all age groups, social strata, and cultural backgrounds throughout the year. These considerations included soil conditions, topography, accessibility, demographics, cultural influences, zoning regulations, and land use restrictions, among other critical aspects. The analysis of this data provided invaluable support for financial planning, regulatory compliance, and program development.
The master plan seamlessly integrates sustainable architectural design and landscape architecture into the site's natural surroundings, which include rolling fields and groves of majestic mature trees. It takes full advantage of the breathtaking lake, ensuring that the site accommodates a diverse array of cultural entertainment venues, including theaters, galleries, and visitor amenities such as outdoor service areas, restaurants, and parking structures.
The landscape design proposes the creation of a network of shaded, active pathways and ramps that gracefully follow the contours of the lake and lagoon, adorned with pavilions, plazas, bandstands, garden terraces, and various water features. These water features are supplied by filtered lake water that circumnavigates the site, filling foundations and pools, providing dynamic aquatic elements. The proposed building masses, along with their strategic placement and orientation, have been meticulously designed to cater to a wide range of purposes, including performances, fine arts exhibitions, resident artist studios, educational programs, and environmental stewardship. The facility also accommodates a variety of small-to-medium-sized group activities and structures.
In Memoriam: Anthony Vidler (1941-2023)
On October 19, 2023, the world lost Anthony Vidler - a brilliant architectural historian, theorist, and academic, and I lost a friend. Born in 1941, Tonyâs illustrious career and enduring influence on the field of architecture have left an indelible mark. However, beyond his professional accomplishments, his personal bonds were equally remarkable, as exemplified by his enduring connections, including his 47-year friendship with me. Our friendship began in the heart of New York City, where we first crossed paths at the Institute for Urban Studies.
Anthony Vidler's career is defined by a passionate exploration of architectural theory and history. With an incisive intellect and a profound understanding of the built environment, he became a guiding light for countless students and scholars. Throughout his life, he produced a body of work that shaped the way we perceive and think about architecture. His writing and lectures were not just scholarly; they were a profound reflection of his love for the subject.
Our friendship that would span nearly five decades began with our shared passion for the discipline of architecture. As life's serendipities often go, in 1978, Tony took residence in the same apartment building as me, marking a pivotal moment in our enduring bond.
In the world of architecture, Tonyâs scholarly works are foundational. His legacy as an architectural historian and theorist will continue to shape the education and inspiration of countless aspiring architects and historians for generations to come. His life's work will forever stand as a testament to the power of curiosity, scholarship, and intellectual camaraderie.
As we bid farewell to Anthony Vidler, we remember not only his contributions to architectural history but also the man who understood that in the city's vast urban landscape, the bonds of true friendship can be as enduring as the structures themselves. The memory of his profound influence on architecture, and his enduring friendship, will continue to inspire and shape the world of architectural thought, a tribute to a life well-lived and a friendship that withstood the test of time.

George Ranalli Architect's hypothetical model of Frank Lloyd Wright's thesis The Living City explores the ways in which Wright challenged the canons of conventional living by reinterpreting the built environment and imaging new alliances between humans and nature.
"The Living City" is a book by Frank Lloyd Wright, published in 1958, in which the author discusses his vision for the modern American city, which he believed should be decentralized and integrated with nature. He advocated for low-density urban development that preserved open space, and believed that buildings should be designed in harmony with their natural surroundings. Wright criticized the grid system of city planning, calling it "grid-locked thinking," and instead proposed a more organic approach to city planning that reflected the natural landscape. He also called for greater public transportation, including monorails and pneumatic tube systems, as well as more walkable communities. The Living City is considered to be an important contribution to the discourse on sustainable urban planning and architecture.
