It's been awhile since we had a little Funeral Home Fun...
For a $10.00 Sheetz Gift Card, how many M&Ms does it take to fill one casket? Whoever guesses the closest amount without going over, will receive the card. Put your guesses in the comments no later than 3:00 pm, on Friday, 6/28/24. Good Luck!!!

June has been recognized as Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month since 1994.
Did you know that? Did I know that?I’m not sure.
It seems like 30 years of bringing awareness to something would yield well…more awareness.

Awareness is the quality or state of being aware: knowledge and understanding that something is happening or exists. Do we have that, both knowledge and understanding that men suffer with mental illnesses?

Men stereotypically and culturally have not talked about their mental health because they’ve not been encouraged or supported to do so on a consistent basis.

There have been so many families that I’ve sat with while making funeral arrangements who have said something like, “Dad was feeling pressure in his chest the past couple of weeks, and every time we asked him if he wanted to go to the hospital, he shrugged and assured us he’d get better.”

Men aren’t especially good at being aware of their own pain, until it’s too late.

For me, it was hard to have awareness because I didn’t have the words for what I was experiencing. Or perhaps I was afraid of the words. “Depression” -- I thought -- was a weakness, something that – just like the heart attack that landed stubborn men in the prep room – was best dealt with by avoiding it altogether.
I avoided it, until I couldn’t. Until I saw how it was affecting those closest to me. Until I struggled to get out of bed. To play with my children. Until I forgot what it was like to actually live life. Until even more frightening thoughts started entering my mind.

And then I did the thing men aren’t so great at doing, I asked for help. I found strength in the rubble of weakness.

We learn and are taught from very early age that there is a preconceived notion of how men should be, how men should feel and how men should act. But what we’re taught and what we experience can be two very contradictory things.

We, as men, are molded into the idea of the ideal version of ourselves that society and those around us deem as acceptable. With those ideas set in stone, it only further cements into place that if we suffer from the burdens of mental health issues, we must suffer through them quietly or risk being seen as weak.

I’m inclined to think that the true testament to strength is admitting when we need help and seeking it.

If you suffer with mental health, I see you, I support you and I reiterate loudly how strong you actually are in being vocal about it.

Just as I am proud of myself for seeking help when my depression was bigger than me, I’m proud of you for steps you’ve taken in the past and for steps you might take in the future.
