99 Colleges Disappear: Shocking Decline in Higher Education Institutions Revealed!
A recent report from the National Center for Education Statistics revealed a 1.7% decrease in the number of higher education institutions eligible for federal financial aid in the 2023–24 academic year, reflecting the closure, merger, or loss of Title IV status for 161 institutions. While 62 new institutions were added, the net loss totaled 99 colleges and universities. The report highlighted significant tuition decreases across sectors and emphasized that the shrinking sector primarily affected small for-profit and vocational colleges, with only public four-year institutions seeing growth. Experts predict further closures, especially for financially struggling "middling colleges," amid demographic challenges and rising operating costs.
