CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING MOTORS PART 1
Condenser Fan Motors:
Direct Drive fan motors are generally used in the outdoor condensing units. They are used in home and commercial units and are found in 230 volt single phase for home use and 460 volt single phase and three phase for commercial and institutional use.
These motors are sealed on the end that mounts or can be sealed on both ends. They are generally available in 60°c and 70°c ambient ratings and use sleeve or ball bearings. Given the choice, 70°c ball bearing motors are preferable. These motors usually have drain (weep) holes. The drain holes are at the bottom and when the motor is mounted the drain holes should be open (plugs removed). The totally enclosed motors are classed as semi-cooled containers as they are exposed to temperatures above and below dew point and condensation will build up inside the motor. Unless drains are provided the motor will fill up with water.
If you have to move a motor with ball bearings it should not be lifted by the leads just as if you have to move one with sleeve bearings you don'ht want to lift it by the shaft. When a single phase permanent capacitor motor is replaced, the capacitor should also be replaced or at the very least tested.
CAUTION: Horse Power requirements change as the cube of fan speed changes. A 10% increase in fan speed requires a 33% increase in motor horse power (HP). So do not replace an 875 RPM motor with a 1075 RPM motor. Stay tuned for part 2 - as we move into the hotter time of year please know we stock a wide range of HVAC motors to keep you and your family cool!
All About Seals for Pool Pumps:
For best service after seal replacement you must have used the right seal and install it correctly. "The Right Seal" means one that is dimensionally correct and one made from the right material. For Chlorine pools a general purpose seal with Buna Rubber for the rubber parts is correct. For Ozone/Salt pools a special seal is used. These are generally made of Viton for the rubber parts. Installation needs to be done carefully. Either apply soapy water or a special seal l**e may be used as lubrication on the rubber parts. Don't use a PTFE or Silicone product and don't lubricate the seal faces. If the motor bearings are rough, they need to be replaced along with the seal. The same is true of worn or damaged impellers. Hope this is useful as summer approaches!
Lubrication of Electric Motor Bearings:
This FYI post will only be concerned with grease lubrication of electric motor ball bearings. These are the most common motor bearings:
10 HP and Less: These smaller motors usually are not designed to be greased. They usually use sealed or shielded bearings and do not have alemite (grease) fittings. Some manufacturers yield to customer preference and install grease fittings on 10HP and lower motors although the motors are not able to benefit from greasing.
15 HP and larger: Follow manufacturers instructions. Use only original type of grease or compatible. To test compatibility of grease types, mix the greases in a cup and leave overnight. If the grease combination changes viscosity dramatically do not use!
Lubrication should be done while the motor is hot, but at rest. The relief ports should be open. DO NOT over grease. Careless or excessive greasing does far more harm than good.
Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!!
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE
AMB is the contraction found on electric motor nameplates for ambient temperature. This is the temperature of the air surrounding the motor and the temperature of the metal the motor is mounted on. Standard motors are usually rated for a maximum of 40°C. Some pool pumps motors are 50°C, Condenser Fan motors are usually 60°C or 70°C. Special motors such as a Kiln Duty motor may be rated higher. Ambient ratings matter because the temperature RISE of the motor is added to the ambient to approximate the actual temperature of the motor.
40°C is 104°F, 50°C is 122°F, 60°C is 140°f and 70°C is 158°F.
Allowable temperature RISE or at full load depends on insulation class and service factor. Max rise at 1.0 SF: Class A is 60°C, Class B is 80°C, Class F is 105°C and Class H is 125°C. Some customers say their motor is too hot. Based on these figures how hot is hot? It Depends!!!
What is Service Factor? On Electric Motor nameplates you will see service factor, SF, or SFA. This is a percentage above 1 which is a measure of overload capacity. Higher is better provided you do not use it all. On pool pump motors particularly it is essential to note both HP (horsepower) and SF (service factor). Some pool motors multiply this for you and give a total HP figure. A 1 HP pool motor with a 1.25 SF would be 1.25 total HP.
As pool season approaches us in South MS, knowing what pool motor you need in the event yours stops working is essential to getting your pump back up and running BEFORE it turns green. We stock quite a few different HP's and can order just about any others. So, if you one day need a pool pump motor give us a chance to provide you with a quote please!

POOL PUMP MOTORS: You will find "service factor" or "SF" listed on your motors' nameplate. On mechanical applications this refers to capacity for temporary overload. On pool pump applications the HP times the SF equals total HP. Service factor typically range from 1.0 (no overload capacity) to 1.5 with the most typical being 1.15 to 1.25. Try to replace your old motor with one that has at least the capacity in HP times SF as the original motor.
We stock a wide range of underground pool pump motors. Shoot me an email at [email protected] or call the office at 601-544-5512 to get price and availability.
This is the time of year to make sure you pump and motor are working properly in your pool - don't let green water and pricy chemicals get you!
Ambient Temperature: Electric motors are rated in Celsius temperature allowed in the surrounding air and the metal it is mounted to. This is the ambient temperature. The standard for belt drive motors is 40℃ which is 104°F. The standard for Condenser Fan motors is usually 60°C or 70°C. Higher ambient ratings will usually last longer. Ambient temperature is very different from "Rise" which is how much the motor heats up in normal operation. Again, the rating is usually in centigrade
Continuing with lessons on capacitors:
In the event you need to purchase a run or a start capacitor follow these guidelines:
Starting Capacitors: The MFD should be as close to the original as possible. The voltage rating should be the same or higher than the original.
Run Capacitors: The MFD rating should be EXACTLY the same as the original. The voltage rating should be the same or higher than the original.
Physical dimensions should be suitable for proper mounting but are not a factor in proper operation as long as they will mount safely.
Visit us, Cameron Electric Motor Co, for all your capacitor needs!
Some of the brands we stock:
Capacitors: Start & Run (we offer the largest selection around) So, let us offer you some advice. Both start and run capacitors share at least one common characteristic. If you do not discharge them, they will BITE you! To avoid being shocked, with all power disconnected, use a screwdriver with an insulated handle to touch both terminals on the top of the capacitor at the same time. The capacitor might "pop" when discharging but after that it can no longer hurt you! If you need more information in removing one give us a call. Also, we can test a capacitor any time you are not sure it's the problem and this is a free service we provide to our customers.
