Capturing the rich heritage and people of the Palmers Crossing Community in Hattiesburg, Mississippi
By the Treaty of Mount Dexter in 1805 the Choctaw Indians ceded to the United States Nearly six million acres of territory lying between the Amite and Tombigbee Rivers. From this area in 1906, Forrest County was formed named after Confederate Calvary leader General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Hardy pi
Friends and family. Wishing everyone reading this blessings and favor. I wanted to share the "Do You Remember?" post that Hazel Mimbs posted. It took many of us way back down memory lane. I remember that pay phone well. Melisa's dad Carl Chisolm was in the military. I had to walk from down by the airport to try to reach him by phone on that pay phone. Some of you young folk may find that inconceivable. You had to make sure you had enough change to make your call! I'll just add that little tidbit.
Hazel Mimbs:
Do you remember… Share your memories.

In the year of 1976, picture taken in the Palmers Crossing Community, in front of the Palmers Crossing Post Office.
The Post Lady was Mrs. Mercie B.Cohen.
Yes, our community had a post office and my family box was P.O. Box 69 until the post office closed.
This was the Bell South pay phone outside the building. Calls were 10 cents 😃
Yes, the city bus had a route through the community every hour traveling to downtown Hattiesburg and connecting with other routes.
I grew up in a community not a hood, “Palmers Crossing”
My friend Merry Bradford Profit and I are posing on the pay phone. 🎓Seniors 1976🎓
Take a look at the shoes we wore in 1976 😃 you can find them in stores today.
Good evening friends and family, a memory shared by our homegirl Hazel Mimbs of the old Palmers Crossing Post Office ran by Mrs. Mercie B. Cohen generated a lot of enthusiasm and dialogue. I will try to share her post later. Someone asked about the Cohen children Ouida and Peter Cohen. I had not seen Peter since he left Palmers Crossing, but I remembered this post from when he came back to Hattiesburg in 2022 when they honored his father, Dr. James Cohen and I thought I'd share. This is such a good picture.
In the face of loss, our community's collective support can be a powerful force for healing; let's continue to pray for and encourage those who are grieving, helping them find a path towards peace.
By faith, we believe that God is close to the broken hearted.

Obituary: The Legacy of Vivian Woullard Brown
On May 29, 1951, Vivian Woullard became the 4th
child born to Joe and Azzie Woullard, Sr. She was a
very quiet and astute lady and was loved by many.

loved teaching and molding young minds so much so that
she worked there for over thirty-five years. She served in

Vivian enjoyed cooking, which was her passion. She

The family truly enjoyed her cooking. Not only did she

Palmers Crossing community, please keep the family of Mrs. Catherine Jackson who was well known and deeply respected in your thoughts and prayers. Her beauty, quiet and easy manner will be missed. Arrangements are as follows:
Happy Sunday community. I have something on my heart today and it weighs heavy. So grateful that God has given us another day, another breath. So grateful to see so many finding and sharing memories and comfort on this page. That was the intention. I hope it is still active long after I'm gone and maybe my grandchildren and yours will feel what we feel when they hit this page of history.
That being said, I see tags to the page on events and parties and that is so good. Please do share an Obituary when we lose a person from this community. I don't always know or see them. Everyone is important on this page. You can't post what you don't know-- no slight intended. However, I beg you to have respect for the elders, children, ladies, etc, and DO NOT share any vulgar language, pictures, etc. Use your voice, your God given breath to spread, love, joy, successes, condolences, and decency on this page. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿 If indecency floats your boat, that is your choice. Please, please, please, not on this page.

"Service is the Heart of our Business"
It was pointed out that we need to recognize National DJ Day. Palmers Crossing has been well represented in that craft over the years by some of the best. Today, we honor and recognize Mr. Vernon Floyd (RIP) WORV/WJMG where so many got their start, Lady Love, Leon Franklin, Donnie Nixon, Thelma Floyd, (RIP); all gone, but not forgotten. The lovely Hazel Mimbs who was on the air for a time and moved on, but came back home, (please don’t miss her reflections in the comments) the Maharaja of the Blues (still doing his thing after several decades) Papa Soul, Frank Babiboi Hall, and with love for her own Natela Leggett gave a shoutout to Stokley Leggett born and raised in the Palmers Crossing community after 20+ years still enjoying the work he loves. Today we salute you all. God bless. Now, I'm getting older and may have missed someone. Please feel free to jog our memories and salute them in the comments. Thank you Natela for the nudge. Do you remember?
Palmers Crossing is a small community. I have raised my family right here. There are so many people who made a name for themselves and provide recognizable service to the public. Last week, we recognized Officer Hardy Sims, the next chief of the Hattiesburg Police Department. This week our baby girl gets some recognition at Covington County Hospital. Congratulations to our baby girl Lashawn Johnson.
Happy Activity Professionals Week to our Activities Therapist LaShawn Johnson, MS, AT! Thank you for all you do for our patients!
Blessings to one and all. Someone shared this with me from the Earl Travillion days and just reading through it was bittersweet. Some of the names on this newspaper clipping from those school days in 1967 are no longer with us. May they R.I.P. However, it made me remember that not only were we challenged by our teachers, but we challenged each other as well. We wanted to make that Honor Roll. 😃😂😃. You are not from Palmers Crossing if you don't see a relative or someone you know. We left that school with a sense of competitiveness and ability to do well in life. There are some doctors and lawyers, teachers, hard workers, craftsmen, etc. on this list who were under the sharp eyes of principal A.B.S. Todd.
Congratulations to another shining star out of the Palmers Crossing Community, Today, Mayor Toby Barker announced that Assistant Chief Hardy Sims would be his nomination presented to the Hattiesburg City Council to lead the Hattiesburg Police Department as Chief.
Correction: My sincere apologies to the Moffett family. I did not get the right obituary. I removed the one that I posted. Thank you all for prayers and expressions of sympathy to this family.
Please keep the Moffett family of Palmers Crossing in your prayers. They have experienced multiple losses in less than a year. My sister Teresa was classmates with Hazel Pearl and friends for life. The Moffetts were raised right down the street off Airport Road. Her sister Ruby Moffett Scroggins lost her daughter Loretta Y. Hawthorne just last year and now is laying to rest another beautiful daughter, Monica Moffett Williams. I also understand they are faced with another tragedy. Our deepest sympathy and prayers are extended to the Moffett family. Many of us know the pain of the lost of a child Ruby, a sibling Ben Scroggins, Hazel and all of the Moffett family, we are praying much for you.
Today is the first Sunday of 2024. Our small rural family oriented community, which was in the “path” of the City of Hattiesburg’s growing pains as declared legally on April 28, 1987, must look back and say “God’s ways are not our ways”. God meant it for our good. After many decades, legal battles, etc., we see the promise, we are still here and no matter where I travel, someone knows of Palmers Crossing. Many communities who started along with us like ENON and also EPPS communities did not. We used to say we were going to town but are now part of the town and the plan. Many of the families still own the land. What was our claim to fame: the faith based family, the land, and the will and determination to survive. In Wikipedia’s free encyclopedia on Hattiesburg “Notable people: Victoria Jackson Gray Adams, educator and civil rights leader” ironically in alphabetical order is first on the list, straight out of Palmers Crossing. Our community and our history is securely included. All around us we see growth and development. In my research, I have never found how Palmers Crossing got it's name, but I was looking at SHEEPLOW, also a rural primarily black community which “got its name years ago when large herds of sheep roved the pine forests of the county. The animals, without any apparent reason, would collect at night and herd together at the place, and people gradually began to refer to it as "Sheep Low". If anybody knows how Palmers Crossing got it's name; please share. So, we the Palmers Crossing Community of Hattiesburg, MS join our Mayor Toby Barker and look to the future with faith, hope, optimism., and gratitude for all our blessings.
On behalf of the Palmers Crossing Community of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and all those who call this home, we wish you a happy, safe and prosperous New Year. If you're from this hood, you know what hard work, faith in God and love of family and friends looks like and how God can and will make a way. Determine to be the best you can be as we bid goodbye to 2023. May God bless you even more in 2024.
Palmers Crossing Community of Hattiesburg, Mississippi wishes you and yours a very Merry Christmas as we celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. We approach the close of 2023 and prepare to greet the new year 2024 with Hope and Faith. May your Christmas sparkle with Love, Laughter, and Goodwill and may your heart be open to his presence.
Happy Sunday friends and family. Blessings to you and yours in this holiday season.
Here's a little Palmers Crossing history I wanted to share on the anniversary of this date. Did you know this 1947 history?

Good morning Palmers Crossing friend and family. I do not know why whole albums have been deleted from this page including all the research and information that went with each and every single photo. It breaks my heart, but maybe some of you high tech young folk can offer suggestions to retain what remains. I still see such merit in it, especially for the future generations. All suggestions will be considered and appreciated. I pray this page is here long after I am gone. It is not a business; just a labor of love.
