Butterfly bush is a very common non-native plant often found in big box stores and planted in yards. It boasts pretty purple blooms that attract butterflies and moths for nectar in mid-summer. At first glance, it may seem harmless, even beneficial to the ecosystem. However, it's not as innocent as it appears!

While in late summer, you may see butterfly bush visited by pollinators, it's not a host plant for ANY native pollinator species. Although native pollinators can enjoy its nectar briefly, the plant offers little ecological benefit beyond that. Moreover, it's an incredibly prolific spreader, with each flower spike capable of holding up to 40,000 seeds! These seeds can be dispersed by air and water, surviving in the soil for up to 5 years with a germination rate of nearly 80 percent. This invasive spread deprives native plants of valuable growing space.

An alternative to butterfly bush to consider is summersweet. Summersweet produces similar fragrant and beautiful bloom spikes while serving as a host to 11 native moth species. Thriving in moist soil, it's an excellent choice for streamside properties or raingardens and contributes positively to the local ecosystem.
