Give the reward for the correct response to the aid.
Bill Steinkraus told THM in 1983: “I cannot stress too much the vital importance of restoring all aids to their normal state as soon as the horse has complied with them. Once the horse has gone forward, ease up on your driving aids; once it has shortened, open your fingers again enough to reward. It is very common to see exactly the opposite: the rider gets the horse to come back once, but never releases his closed fingers again, and spends the rest of the hour hanging in the horse’s mouth, or, having gotten the horse to go forward, spends the rest of the day with his legs stuck halfway through the horse. The reason you want your aids to be effective is so that you can teach the horse to respond to them more and more sensitively – and so that you can use them less and less."

Since the first woman trainer to win the Belmont Stakes happened today, here is a piece on Mary Hirsch who helped blaze the way for women trainers.
This is an original 1938 photo of trainer Max Hirsch and his daughter Mary who also a trainer at Jamaica Race track.
Mary Hirsch was the first woman granted a license to train Thoroughbreds throughout America in 1935. She had applied in 1933 but was denied until the following year where she was granted a license to train in Illinois and Michigan.
Hirsch became the first woman to train a winner at Saratoga.
When her horse No Sir ran in the 1937 Kentucky Derby, Mary Hirsch became the first woman to train a runner in the Kentucky Derby. No Sir finished 13th to War Admiral.
Later Mary would train Thanksgiving to win the 1938 Travers under Eddie Arcaro.
Mary Hirsch trained for five years, 1935-1939, and her cumulative earnings were $104,285 representing 84 wins. Her best year was her first, when she won 29 races with earnings of $34,850.
These were earnings which came in the midst of the Great Depression when stakes purses were quite small.
Mary Hirsch ended her training career when she married Charles McLennan, a prominent racing official, in 1940.
