Born on Nov. 9, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, Dorothy Jean Dandridge started performing as a child with her older sister, Vivian, and they were billed as the Wonder Children. As teens, they partnered with a third girl, Etta Jones, touring the country as The Dandridge Sisters. They also appeared in several films including A Day At The Races with the Marx Brothers, and had a regular singing gig at the Cotton Club in New York.
Clearly the standout, Dorothy branched off on her own, married Harold Nicholas of the Nicholas Brothers dance team and starred in several films. After her divorce from Harold in 1951, due to his infidelities and having to care for their only child, Harolyn, who was mentally disabled, Dorothy threw herself into her work and returned to singing in the nightclub circuit and appearing in several films including Tarzan’s Peril, Harlem Globetrotters and Bright Road. Her most successful was Carmen Jones in 1954 which earned her an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress.
Dorothy starred in several other films, but none with the stature of Carmen Jones. This was partly because of her affair with the spiteful Carmen Jones director Otto Preminger who was married at the time. And because she didn’t want to be type cast in the mostly “black maid” roles available. Hollywood didn’t know what to do with Dorothy Dandridge and this left her depressed and dejected.
In 1962, she married John “Jack” Denison which proved to be a tragic mistake. Not only was he physically abusive, but he forced her into bankruptcy. Her daughter, Harolyn was placed in a state mental institution.
But Dorothy soon planned a comeback. She had signed on to star in several films in Mexico and appear in numerous supper club engagements.
When she was found dead on September 8, 1965, her apartment was cluttered with trunks, clothes and sheet music indicating she was preparing for travel. Her body was discovered by her manager. She was lying on her bathroom floor, naked. A bath had reportedly been drawn. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Dorothy Dandridge was 42 years old.
Her death was initially reported to be the result of an embolism due to a broken metatarsal bone in her foot, sustained while she was rehearsing. But later findings pointed to an overdose of an antidepressant.
While many said her death was a su***de and others said it was accidental, the medical examiner ruled it inconclusive or “undetermined.
