Why an Otter Named Ollie?
Perhaps one of the most nurturing animals found in our WNC rivers is the otter. Otters are known to sleep in the water holding hands or embracing, and mother otters float with their babies on their tummies. Ollie is the "mascot" for our Pediatric Palliative & Hospice Care program, Riversong, and we hope he brings a smile to lots of faces.

On the evening of Monday, July 31, 2023, the Hospice Home Store on Long Shoals Road in Arden caught fire. Arden Home Store Assistant Manager, Mark Allard, shared his thoughts on social media in the days that followed and captured the essence of what this store means: "I’m sure some people might have a hard time making a connection between the retail workings of a resale store and helping people after the death of a loved one. What many people might not realize is that many of our donations come from families that have experienced what Four Seasons does firsthand. As an employee of Four Seasons, I have had the privilege
and honor of sharing one of the most intimate experiences that one will ever go through— the death of a loved one." -Mark Allard

We recently received a very unique donation of a French “Morbier” tall case clock, circa 1850s, at our Downtown Hendersonville Home Store! Read below for details about this special, rare item.

Price of Clock: $2,400
Dimensions: 20"W x 8"D x 91"H
Serviced in recent years at a local shop; cleaned and oiled by our Home Store team. We regulated it over a week and it keeps good time to within a minute per day.

Clocks described as “Morbier” are those made in the vicinity of the Franche-Comté region southeast of Paris and near the border with Switzerland. They were originally rustic clocks sold to tourists traveling the highway from Paris to Geneva. All the parts were hand-made. The dial on this clock is marked “BERGERON à Pont-s/-Yonne” which refers to the town of Pont-sur-Yonne.

The mechanism is an 8-day, weight-driven movement with brass gears and cast parts. The cabinet is pine with inlay, the dial is hand-painted enamel, and the surround is embossed brass (repoussé).

An unusual feature is that the clock full-strikes twice at the top of the hour. Then 2 minutes later, it repeats, counting the hours again. It also strikes once at the bottom of the hour. There is a small numbered dial on the face of the clock that once served as an alarm. At some point, this was disabled by a previous owner and no longer works.
