The Lake Gaston Association will hold its monthly membership meeting on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. at the Lake Gaston Baptist Church, 2378 Eaton Ferry Road, Littleton, NC. (Located across from the LKG Chamber of Commerce and Subway Restaurant).

The guest speakers will be representatives from the Sheriffs’ Departments from the five counties surrounding Lake Gaston and the topic will be “Technology in Law Enforcement.” This meeting is open to the public and will be recorded and posted on the LGA’s YouTube Channel.

The guest speakers were John Giese - Director of Communications, Pollution Response & Emergency Preparedness, Health & Safety, and Holly Brown - Program Specialist, Office of Pollution Response & Emergency Preparedness, both from the Virginia Dept of Environmental Quality; and Wesley Marshall - Environmental Health Manager, Sr., from the VA Dept of Health. The three officials discussed the recent South Hill Warehouse fire and the resulting recreational and fish consumption advisories that affected the Lake Gaston community. The LGA will hold its monthly membership meeting on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. at the Lake Gaston Baptist Church, 2378 Eaton Ferry Road, Littleton, NC. (Located across from the LKG Chamber of Commerce and Subway Restaurant).

The guest speakers will be representatives from the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VA DEQ). They will be discussing the recent warehouse fire in South Hill, VA, the impact it had on the surrounding watershed, and the resulting recreational and fish consumption advisories that were issued.
This presentation is open to the public and LGA membership is not required. The presentation will be recorded and posted on the LGA's YouTube channel within a week of the meeting.

The LGA is looking for volunteers to spend an hour of their time assisting LGA Board members during the Littleton Lake Gaston Festival on Saturday, August 31st. Volunteers will help by standing outside of the LGA's tent and encouraging festival-goers to stop by to learn more about the LGA. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt!

A DEQ team collected real-time water quality readings and water samples at 6 sites on Mountain, Dockery, and Miles Creeks, as well as the Roanoke River/Lake Gaston. Contractors collected real-time water quality readings and water samples at 8 locations along Dockery, Mountain, Miles Creeks, and the Meherrin River. Observations in Miles Creek, Mountain Creek, and the Roanoke River/Lake Gaston showed no foam, sheen, odor, or aquatic life mortalities, and real-time water quality readings were within normal ranges. Real-time field observations can be viewed by clicking on the link below. Note: the interactive map has been updated to now include: the extent of the current recreation and fish consumption advisory, surface water sampling locations, and color coding of the water monitoring locations to indicate locations most recently monitored. Viewers can access a legend by toggling the legend icon in the top right corner of the map.

Updated surface water sampling results have been posted, and the results table has been reformatted to indicate where compounds were detected. The table can be accessed through the data tab or here.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Division of Water Resources began collecting water samples from the Roanoke River/Lake Gaston and the Meherrin River on Friday, July 12. Analytical results for NCDEQ’s sampling are available through their South Hill, Virginia, Warehouse Fire and Spill page. A link to the NCDEQ is also available under the resources section of this page.

As cleanup operations continue at the site of the former warehouse, the incident management team is focusing on data collection needs to support the Virginia Department of Health’s evaluation of the current recreation and fish consumption advisory as well as long-term sampling needs.
