Recovering “good kid” here. 🙋🏻♀️
Now I’m learning how to empower myself and my children to make “good trouble” instead.

Posted • .klatzko Whenever I hear someone say a child is a "good kid" it makes me cringe. Sure, it's harmless and well-meaning, but if you really sit with it, what does it mean? And is it actually that harmless if a child hears it over and over throughout their life?
Yes it's hard to sometimes step back and remove our adult egos. Sometimes we want to praise or connect and just don't know what to say. But there are an infinite number of ways to describe a kid, lift them up, honor and respect them and their work, besides calling them "good".
So, no, I don't want my kids to be "good kids". I want them to be strong. Autonomous. Self motivated. Self assured. Self confident. Compassionate. Kind. Empathetic. I want them to be authentically, genuinely, unapologetically themselves. I don't want them to make decisions or live their lives for anyone's stamp of approval except their own.
So here's to raising kids who aren't GOOD. 💪🏼Who’s with me? 🙋🏻♀️

Breathe easy counseling serves 14 and up. If you and/or your teen are interested in having a safe space to talk, please reach out to schedule an appointment with Breathe easy counseling at [email protected] or (717)220-3495.
This is not an exhaustive list. I could go on. Symptoms of teen depression are not always obvious, and not fixed.
But it does help to know what to look for so that you can help your teen find supports.
Parents often ask me how they’ll know when it’s the right time to seek professional help. Honestly? If you’re wondering about it, it’s probably time.
Teen therapy isn’t a a lifetime commitment, but it can be life saving…especially when there’s depression.
It’s important to note that teens do experience mood shifts, ups and downs, and periods of time when they might need space from friends, activities, and other things they once loved. Humans need breaks sometimes.
But if you notice some of these symptoms are interfering with your teen’s life to a point where your teen is struggling…reach out for help.
I know that therapy can feel overwhelming at first - and maybe your teen feels like talking won’t help…but I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I’ve seen a lot of teens move from hesitancy about therapy to embracing the process to thriving. It really can make a big difference.
I hear it’s depression screening awareness day - I think every day should be depression screening awareness day…with over 3 million adolescents (12-17) reporting at least one major depressive episode, it’s time we prioritized daily mental health check ins.
