In June, The Conference Board's Employment Trends Index (ETI) declined to 110.27 from 111.04 in May, marking a continued decrease since its peak in March 2022. This drop suggests potential employment reductions in the latter half of 2024, although the index remains higher than its pre-pandemic level. Payroll growth remains strong but has slowed compared to the rapid gains seen during the pandemic recovery. Despite these trends, the labor market is expected to cool only modestly, with net nonfarm payrolls likely to stay positive as companies strive to retain workers amidst ongoing difficulties in hiring.

In June, total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 206,000, with gains in government, health care, social assistance, and construction, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate remained relatively stable at 4.1%, with 6.8 million unemployed people, both figures showing an increase compared to the previous year’s rates of 3.6% and 6.0 million unemployed.

Job hopping is slowing down, with the average rate of workers switching jobs dropping to 3% in May from nearly 3.75% in mid-2022, according to a Bank of America Institute report. During the peak of the Great Resignation in July 2022, job switchers saw an annual pay raise of 8.5%, compared to 6.7% for those who stayed in their jobs. This rapid wage growth contributed to high inflation in 2022 and 2023. However, as of May 2024, median pay raises for job hoppers have significantly decreased from over 20% to about 10%, with middle- and higher-income Americans experiencing the largest slowdown, while lower-income Americans still see strong median pay raises from job changes.

In May, job openings changed little at 8.1 million, with hires at 5.8 million and total separations at 5.4 million, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job openings rate was little changed at 4.9%. Notable changes included a decrease in openings in accommodation and food services and private educational services, while state and local government, durable goods manufacturing, and the federal government saw increases in job openings.
