Turning $10 into million part 2…
So there I sat in the back row of this small Pentecostal church week after week slowly letting my defense down enough to allow the message to pe*****te my heart. What began like what seemed like the greatest sales pitch ever quickly turned into something profound, I was beginning to believe in something much greater than what any person could explain with words. I began to truly listen, after attending a service I found myself walk-in into Libray and a book jumping at me, that book was The Leadership wisdom of Solomon.
The following Sunday with my mind equip with new perspective I began to understand and believe. The sermon that day was about letting go and surrendering ourselves to God’s will, as sermon was finishing the pastor began asking for anyone to step forward and give to god anything they could afford. There was only one problem I was broke, I was down to my last $10. In that moment I decide to fully give myself to god by giving him all that I had so I step forward and gave the church my last $10, it wasn’t much but it was all I had. That day God planted a seed in me, it was a mustard seed but I nurtured that seed in to one of faith and belief letting god deal with the things I didn’t have control over.
A few days later I received a phone call, it’s was my cousin asking me if I was interested in taking over Superior Foods Supermarket. Without any hesitation I said yes, and that’s how $10 turns into Millions. That yes, came with a price. One that will be shared another day. I don’t know where you are on your life but I hope my story helps you realize that what stops dreams from becoming reality is not capital it’s believe.
(1/2) Turning $10 into millions…
Yesterday marked my 12th year running and owning Superior Foods Supermarket. I’m filled with gratitude and appreciation for the spark, the light and the magnet that has pulled me to be the person I am today.
The story of the supermarket begins in a small church in Orlando, Florida. The year is 2010 and I’m living with Bela at my in-laws. 3 months prior we had made the move from NC as life had threw us a curveball as Bela got pregnant while on birth control. I didn’t have much going for me at that time I was a HS dropout with no other skills than my grocery experience which at that point was over 10 years being in and around grocery’s stores. But it was 2010 the economy was s**t and the market was over saturated with low wage workers so I couldn’t find a opportunity in the feild that I knew. Jobless without any leads my mother in law made attending church a requirement for us to live with them. Reluctantly I said yes, at this point in my life my only experience with religious teachings was through the heavy hand of the Catholic Church which had beat all spirituality out of me.

Our time here is magic! It's the only space we have to realize whatever it is that is beautiful, whatever is true, whatever is great, whatever is potential, whatever is rare, whatever is unique, in truth It's the only space so have fun, laugh and enjoy the show.
Cheers to another round🤪
“There’s a trick to the grateful exit. It begins with the vision to recognize when a job, life stage, or a relationship is over and let it go. It means leaving what’s over without denying its validity or its past importance to our lives. It involves a sense of future, a belief that every exit line is an entry, that we are moving up, rather than out”—— Ellen Goodman
Balance, we all seek it but just a few find it. My external and internal world are represented by this rock stack. Built from a solid foundation and patience I managed to elevate it out of the bottom of the river swayed by currents. Once above water I’ve added more and more making it more complex but with complexity comes risk. Risk of the unforeseen knocking it over or the risk of me stoping.

Reality... I’m tired!!!
I’ve been in the frontline of this COVID situation since March. I’ve been working non stop on multiple fronts growing your food, advocating for a healthier community, and managing 2 grocery stores only pausing to take a breath.
I post this not for you to take pity of me but to shine a light on the true reality of our nation. We can’t put a filter on this we are tired, we are overwhelmed, and we are witnessing the death spiral of small business all across the nation as corporate giants rake up our nations wealth while people are suffering, lonely and depressed causing them to take their own lives because all they have is a screen.
I don’t have nothing to sell or the solution. All I’m doing is showing you the reality that everything is not Instagram perfect ☯️
The road isn’t always smooth... You encounter many bumps and turns that were never on the map. Sometimes you have bad luck and breakdown on the side of road, but I hope I can serve you as a example to never give up... Keep going despite the things that happen in order to reach for your destination.
This year marks my 10th year in business at Superior Foods and to say it’s been challenging would be a understatement but owning the supermarket has not only provide for me and my family it’s open new doorways into a new world. I began Twin Oaks Urban Farm with the mission of creating a working urban farm model that could be replicated to create a web of urban farms. Next was that would serve the urban farm collective in washing, packing and distributing the food to the neighborhoods and other food networks. But the most interesting doorways has been , it has allow my 15 years of retail experience to shine in creating an intimate store offering the best our region and world has to offer.
So don’t stop... the journey is just beginning!
I was born to do this... From running through the coffee tress as a young child and growing up working in bodegas in NYC to now owning a Supermarket, Artisan Grocery Store, managing 2 Farms and advocating for healthy communities. My life has always revolved around food!!!
After dreaming and thinking about opening a small market for the past 2 years that dream has come true. I dreamt of a small intimate store where we would be able to tell and share our small producers stories. The mission being simple and of pure heart no lies, no harmful ingredient, and no harmful chemicals. Focusing on providing products to bring balance and total health of mind, body and spirit.
I’m eternally thankful and grateful for my wife and my kids for going on this wonderful journey with me.

In early April and I took over the operation of the High Tunnel on Pershing Street. We got a late start but we have made quick progress in the Tunnel. We planted a crop of radishes and Asian mix greens to utilize bed space while the tomatoes transplants grew and installed the trellising. It’s now summer and all the tomatoes and cucumbers are in the ground and the micro greens are pumping.

The end result of a open source DIY Compost Tea Brewer I found in the inter webs. The compost tea is going to nourish plants as well as fungi, microbes and bacteria. My goal is to use the compost tea on a regular basis to feed my tomatoes and cucumbers.
