UESCA | Science-based endurance sports coaching certifications, educating the best coaches worldwide
❇️We've been working hard to improve the rewards and benefits UESCA certified coaches have access to and add more value to UESCA certifications. We are excited to announce a whole new UESCA Coach rewards platform that allows us to provide more discounts to more coaches worldwide.
👉👉What is It?
❇️We've partnered with some of the top endurance sports-related brands to offer geographically specific discounts so that we can provide more value to UESCA coaches. Through the new rewards platform (powered by Endurance Zone), coaches have access to discounts from companies such as Garmin, The Feed, Sweaty Betty, Ray-Ban, Rudy Project, Oakley, Nike, New Balance, Hyperice ... the list goes on. Discounts vary depending on your location but we've worked hard to get global discounts for many of these rewards.
👉👉How do I access it?
❇️Once you've completed a UESCA coaching certification, you will get automatic access to the Rewards Platform and you'll access it directly from your UESCA Dashboard any time you'd like. Your access is geographically-specific to you. Therefore, you'll see all the rewards available to you in your location.
👉👉And it gets even better!
❇️We will be adding more and more benefit partner rewards to this platform ongoing so if you don't see your favorite brands yet, they may be there eventually.
All coach benefits are available to active UESCA certified coaches. If your certification has lapsed, no problem. You can recertify any time and access these rewards.
Happy Father's Day to all the incredible dads out there! Today, we honor the men who have guided and supported us. Thank you for your love, your example, and your endless sacrifices. We are better because of you. 🌲💕
Thank you so very much for being a part of our growing and wonderful UESCA community and family. If you've been thinking about enrolling in any of our coaching certifications, now is the time. We want to give you advanced notice of an upcoming price change. Take advantage of our current course price of $499 through the month of June.
Due to ongoing increases in operational costs and our diligence and focus on providing more value and support to certified coaches, certification course prices will increase to $599 on July 1st. Along with the pricing change, we will be adding a new payment plan option - 3 payment plan. This price increase only affects the Coach Certification Courses.
We truly appreciate your understanding as we strive hard to create the very best educational products, benefits and learning opportunities. Our goal is to always provide the best value, experience and growth opportunities for coaches.
We're providing advanced notice so you can take the opportunity to enroll at current pricing!

“Be brave enough to suck at something new” – Jon Acuff
Based on what we've seen in the Endurance Sports arena, we can guess that at least 50 percent of those looking to start a coaching business never start one. While there are many reasons for this, our best guess is that the number one reason is fear. Which we totally get … 100%! As a small business ourselves we know that pulling the trigger on starting a new business is hard and scary.
Fear can take many different forms. For some, it can totally paralyze them, and they never take even the smallest step to start. For others, it may appear as perfectionism. An example, an individual may be waiting for the perfect logo to be created, or they might have to exhaustively research every coaching platform before making a decision. This ‘perfectionism’ may also appear to be that of procrastination. Whether it be perceived perfectionism or procrastination, the genesis of these actions (or lack thereof) is often fear.
Fear also can take the form of 👇
▶️Imposter Syndrome
▶️Fear of "sucking at something"
▶️Fear of making mistakes
▶️Anxiety about the unknown future
If any of these sound familiar, read further!
✅Being new at something doesn't mean you aren't qualified. If you took the steps to be qualified, the next step is gaining experience. So just start!
✅Sucking at something new isn't bad, it's expected. Go and grow.
✅Mistakes will happen. They are learning opportunities.
✅It's normal to not know everything.
✅It's always a bit uncomfortable. Get comfortable with that fact.
✅Pushing through fear and going for it is worth it.
The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now. - Chinese Proverb

“Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another.” ‒ Albert Einstein.
This quote pertains to a law of physics: the conservation of energy and relates to the Stretch Shortening Cycle (SSC) as this cycle converts potential elastic energy to kinetic energy.
By definition, the SSC is representative of an eccentric contraction of a muscle followed by a rapid concentric contraction of the same muscle. Concerning running, the quadriceps, obliques, and calves represent the muscles most influenced by the SSC.
When the feet hit the ground, the quadriceps and calves eccentrically contract (lengthen) and then rapidly concentrically contract (shorten) during the drive phase to provide forward propulsion.
To illustrate how the stretch-shortening cycle works, think of shooting a rubber band. The more you stretch the band, the farther it will travel in the air once released. However, if you stretch the band too much, it could break. Additionally, the more tension the band has (harder to pull back), the farther it will go. Muscles and tendons are the rubber band concerning the human body. The variables that affect the degree of elastic return of the SSC are:
▶️Length of the stretch
▶️Speed of the stretch (loading)
▶️Stiffness of the muscle and tendon
▶️The time between the stretch and the contraction
From a running perspective, the legs act as springs. The springs compress during the first half of the support phase and rebound during the drive phase.
Keep learning, growing and improving as a coach with us!

🎉New Podcast Episode Launched 👉 UESCA's ‘All Things Endurance’ podcast! Episode 15🎉 - Understanding Self Defense with Guest James Jankiewicz
➡️ In this episode of the All Things Endurance podcast, host Rick Prince chats with self-defense expert, James Jankiewicz.
It is an unfortunate reality that recently, a month or two do not go by without hearing about someone being assaulted while exercising outdoors, often with horrific consequences. As the growth of trail/ultrarunning and gravel cycling is on a meteoric rise, there are more athletes running and cycling in isolated areas than ever before. While learning self-defense is important for everyone to know, it’s never been more important amongst those that exercise in isolated environments.
As noted in the podcast, James is developing a self-defense specialization course for UESCA which will be free of charge for everyone due to its importance. When this course launches, UESCA will announce it via newsletter and social media channels.

New Blog Post 👉 Understanding Overtraining
While everyone has heard of the terms “Overtraining” and “Overtraining Syndrome”, there is a lot of confusion as to what overtraining really is. In this section we will define the components of the overtraining spectrum and touch on how relative-energy deficiency in sport may drive underperformance. To begin, “overtraining” is defined as the verb to describe the process of intensified training that could lead to “acute fatigue”, “overreaching”, or “overtraining syndrome”. Therefore, overtraining can be used interchangeably with “overload” training.
In this blog we cover the following topics:
▶️Acute fatigue
▶️Functional overreaching
▶️Non-functional overreaching
▶️Overtraining Syndrome
▶️RED-S
Read it here: https://uesca.com/overtraining-syndrome/

Overtraining Syndrome » UESCA This UESCA post discusses overtraining syndrome, RED-S, acute fatigue and functional and non-functional overreaching.
It has long been advised to ice not only injured areas, but also to ice areas on the body to prevent injury. The genesis behind this was primarily to reduce inflammation. However, it is now believed that inflammation is a critical aspect of the healing and muscle-repair process.
Regarding acute injuries 👉 the physiological response to injury is inflammation, repair, and then remodeling. Inflammation, as the first step of this process, is the body's natural response to the injury, and there is not an advantage in trying to reduce or delay inflammation. One critical negative impact of the application of ice is that it acts as a vasoconstrictor of the local blood vessels. Restricting blood flow will interrupt the body’s physiological response to the injury and negatively impact the healing process.
A 2015 study by Leeder et al. found that an ice bath did not promote recovery in subjects with DOMS. In fact, icing may slow the healing process. Dr. Jonathan Leeder stated that there is solid evidence to show that athletes feel better after an ice bath and this is likely why ice baths are popular and are believed to correlate with muscle healing and recovery. Despite this, there is no evidence to show that cold therapy results in increased performance and enhanced recovery.
While not injury-specific per se, a 2020 paper by Fuchs et al., found that cooling via cold water immersion post-exercise during recovery from resistance-type exercise lowers the capacity of the muscle to take up dietary protein. This may be one of the reasons why icing delays the healing process, as noted above.
While icing still remains a topic of debate, athletes and coaches should at least consider the implications of the use of ice and cold therapy in various situations.
