Join us in congratulating Officer Trenton Morrow, Officer Mitchell Schlotterer, and Officer Michael Kelso upon their graduation from the police academy today.
We're proud that our officers stood out as leaders in the 142nd Recruit Class of the Columbus Police Training Academy. Each class selects five individuals to serve as class officers, and all three Hilliard officers were selected. Officer Morrow was Class Secretary, Officer Schlotterer was Class Treasurer, and Officer Kelso was Class Orator.
The academy includes 31 weeks of instruction on a diverse curriculum of subjects, with an emphasis on scenario-based training. In total, the academy provides more than double the amount of training required by the state. Recruits receive instruction on de-escalation, use of force, patrol operations and applied behavioral science, among other topics.
Next, the new officers will complete a 15-week field training program with a certified training officer.
We look forward to welcoming them to an incredibly rewarding line of work and introducing them to the Hilliard community!

During a special Veterans Day breakfast event, keynote speaker Maj. Gen. Deborah Ashenhurst, Ohio Department of Veterans Services director, presented a ballistic vest to K9 Griff and his handler, Officer Matt Braden – a U.S. Marine Corps veteran himself.
"K9 Griff plays an important role in our policing work, specifically in our work to combat drug trafficking," said Chief of Police Michael Woods. "We're grateful to OhioHealth for helping to ensure he is safer doing this work."

Vogelsang joined Hilliard police in 2012, and served as a patrol officer and investigator prior to his promotion earlier this year. Additionally, he is a graduate of Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in marketing and advertising.

❤️🤍💙We're proud to announce HPD has received federal recognition for our efforts to hire veterans.
This week the department earned the 2023 HIRE Vets Medallion Award, presented by the U.S. Department of Labor. About 34 percent of Hilliard police employees are veterans.
One of the reasons so many veterans choose to is our training program. Newly hired police officers who are eligible for Veterans Affairs educational benefits can enroll in our program and receive VA educational funds on a monthly basis for 12 months following graduation from the police academy.

Active shooter events can happen quickly, and statistics show it takes an average of three minutes for police to respond from the time of receiving the 911 call. 📲 Would you know what to do in those three minutes if you were caught in one of these horrible tragedies?
We presented a Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) class at the Noor Islamic Cultural Center over the weekend.
The CRASE course, which was designed and built on the "Avoid, Deny, Defend" strategy, provides strategies, guidance, and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. Topics include the history and prevalence of active shooter events, civilian response options, and emergency medical treatment.
🤝Thank you to Noor leadership for reaching out about hosting this class, which we offer in a partnership with Norwich Township Fire Department. We're grateful for the relationship we've fostered with the Noor community.

Britton Farms: We need your help with a stolen vehicle case.
At about 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, officers responded to Britton Farms Drive in response to a number of vehicle break-ins. When officers arrived, they found a Hyundai Tucson parked off the curb with busted out windows. The vehicle was stolen from Columbus.
Later that day we were called back to the neighborhood. A resident on Cordoba Street reported someone stole a black 2009 Lexus RX300 from their driveway overnight.
It's common practice for thieves to ditch a car, and then steal another to escape the area, so we believe these incidents are related. We're asking residents to check their surveillance cameras for suspicious activity that may have captured during the overnight hours Oct. 2 to Oct. 3.
Anyone with information is asked to contact HPD at 614-876-7321.

📵It's time to crack down on texting, scrolling, and swiping while driving.
Beginning this Thursday, police officers in Ohio can pull over a vehicle if they see the driver using or holding a cell phone.
The law change is an effort to save lives. Every year thousands of people die from distracted driving, most alarmingly, texting and driving. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.
You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.

The City of Hilliard Division of Police is investigating the death of an infant.
Officers were called to a residence at 4435 Paxton Drive South at 8:51 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20. Shortly before, Norwich Township Fire Department medics had responded to a medical emergency at the home and discovered evidence that a child was recently born.
Upon arrival, officers searched the area and found the baby in a vehicle parked in the backyard.
Officers immediately administered CPR. The child was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where it was pronounced dead.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the infant’s death.
A woman believed to be the child’s mother was transported to an area hospital.
“This is a heartbreaking situation and one of the worst calls to receive,” said Chief of Police Michael Woods. “We’re focused on determining what happened to this child.”
The investigation is active. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 614-876-7321.
