Talk a sunrise and Dune Lane walk with me. I ran into the Queen of North Forest Beach, Susan H. When she first sees the sunrise she says, "Good morning God".

The water and the weather couldn't be nicer! Ernesto is churning up some significant waves so the surfers were out for high tide this morning. I had a blast wading out to get some shots. Then then a jelly fish got me. Ouch. The humidity must have been 110 percent. The air was so thick the light was weird. 8.16.24

he sky was a touch clearer, the air a touch cooler, and the wind was from the North. 8.15.24

Habakkuk 3: 4
And the earth is full of His praise. His radiance is like the sunlight;

Our huge tides have the effect of making our beach below sea level at low tide. After a good rain the beach is mirrored with fresh rainwater seeping toward the sea over rain smooth sand. As the sun rises that mirror becomes the surface a giant pearl freshly washed by the rains. Today was such a day, a day to reflect on the phenomenon of the elements. You can walk on the surface of a pearl and watch a star rise out of a jeweled sea here, if you have eyes to see.

The interesting thing about seeing is you must look. I am sad to report that many do not look–or see. I cannot fathom what priorities are more important. 9.13.24

Our little dot of a world, so beautiful and so important to me, is flying round our star toward that day when there is equal day and night, the Autumn Equinox. Our star will ;continue to appear t to slip further out to sea until the new year begins. She will appear to stand still for a while and begin the journey North again. The air will lose the summer haze and the clouds will fill with fire before the orb breaks the horizon. I love summer, but fall all the more. It won't be long. 8.11.24

The sun looked like a balloon reflecting light from above as it rose through the Lowcountry August haze.

The earth receives one-one-billionth of the suns total energy. About 35% of that is reflected away by clouds. All life on earth is dependent on that one-one-billionth. If we wanted to grasp the scale of Gods supply, our one star has more cousins than there are grains of sand on all the beaches and deserts of the entire world. Just a little something to think about the next time you dribble a few million grains off on the spire of a sandcastle.8..10.24

I am very thankful to have the opportunity to watch the sunrise over the sea and the beach this morning. It took a while for the sun to climb over the cloud bank offshore but when it did it blazed its power into the good-ol’ South Carolina August haze. Summer winds have built our dunes and feed our sea oats. The combination is beautiful. I couldn’t resist a few shots of the way the sand, the oats, and the ghost crabs interact.

I caught a squadron of pelicans surfing the roof tops, as they do when the wind is just so. Photography captures a moment and holds it. The eye can then explore the nuance that is often missed in real time. Painters do the same thing, often better. I love the nuance as and the pageant.

When I got back to the house and looked at this mornings images I realized it might be difficult to believe these are all from the same morning. The conspiracy of the rising sun, its light dancing in the colds, the clouds themselves shape shifting and flying at different altitudes, capturing the light streaming from over the horizon and changing color. Then the solar fire appears from its thrown 93 million miles away, it is just amazing. Of course that is why I am there, to see the glory of the pageant, the glory of the heavens, the dynamic world we live in. All of life is unpredictably beautiful and deeply challenging. I am so thankful there is someone above it all, way above it all. 7.23.24

Habakkuk 2:14
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

These images are not accurate. I definitely over did it to make them presentable. The morning was dramatic but I pushed the colors a lot for this post. As you can tell from recent post I am in love with the sea oats, again. 7.21.24

Lamentations 3:22-23

A plum-good morning. I was disappointed because I could see grey clouds in the east as I waled toward the beach. Then I remembered that you NEVER know what you are going to get from the sunrise. What a delicate and gorgeous surprise I had. The same thing happens when I go to God. I never know what i am going to get but like the sunrise it is alway something that feels like an enormous and beautiful love.

The first photograph, taken yesterday, shows a woman dwarfed at the cusp of the land, the sea, and the sky. The beach is where people go to connect with the immensity of our origan. This is one of the touch points of a higher reality, a place where we feel something I know as God, and others know as a longing, or peace, or awe. It takes no talent or maturity to experience the beach, kids love it and all of us with a kid inside us. Everyone is an expert at beach sports. Sand sculptures abound, kids skip and run, mothers and daddies lay in the sun, teens cruise. The beach is the most important and most unique and most accessible points to encounter why we take vacations. We need rejuvenation, we need rest, we need stimulation. The bar is low and the reward is high on the beach, where the waves sing in the background, the birds flirt with our food, the wind is felt and praised for its cooling presence. Even the walk to the beach is an adventure for all of us. We watch families pulling wagons with tykes, chairs, and umbrellas toward the beach every day. They have to walk the deep sand of the dune in a canyon of sea oats waving hello. Up the dune pulling hard and down onto a 12-mile-wide paradise and hundreds of feet of frolic for the children. The beach does the good work on all hearts, all spirits, all bodies. It is the wonder of this island because it bring us to the sky, the sea and says, come play, come rest, come touch the face of God.

The dunes are growing high on as summer winds fly sand into the sea oat lined trails. The song of the sea is muted until you top the dune and are greeted by its full throat. The crush and swish is a mighty song. The air is thick with water and barely moving this morning but that place where the land, the sky and the sea meets is so amazing it makes you forget about the price. Happy Independence Day. We live in the richest, freest, and strongest nation in the world. Our politics stink but our potential is amazing. July fourth, 2024

Through the morning dunes toward a subtle sky and watching it turn bright. A fleet of clouds, and then, "is that a mullet down there"?

Ecclesiastes 1:5

I am a huge fan of N.C Wyeth illustrations, including those in Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island", and The Hudson River Schoo of Art, and of Winslow Homers paintings of ships, men and the sea. I am a visual romantic. Todays sunrise over the distant horizon, and attending clouds, hid pirate ships in full sail. The sun painted the sky and the clouds with mysteries and adventures. I tweaked the images a bit to give that feel I so love of colors and forms that need to be occupied by the minds of little boys hoping for a life among brave men on wooden decks under clouds of sail. That call, in my case turned out to be a call to something so high I couldn't imagine it. I did sail and quite a bit and I did adventure over oceans but none of it filled my heart like the adventure of the man Jesus. When the God of the sky revealed the nature of God in Jesus, a treasure greater that of old Ben Gunn filling my eyes and heart. The sky proclaims the heat of God as does a path that leads to a sunrise beach by the sea. I hope you enjoy these illustrations and my wild thoughts on this day, Saturday, June 29th, 2024. zz
