I usually do not post political issues and major difficult issues but I saw this video last weekend and think it gives a very good explanation and both sides of the removal of confederate monuments around the country. As you all probably know the only one in Massachusetts was located on Georges Island to confederate prisoners who had died, and there are many differediffering opinions about this. This video is a little long but I think it is very clear and deals with the subject well.

Learn Our History Today: On March 4, 1776, during the American Revolution, 2,000 troops of George Washington’s Continental Army began digging trenches and positioning cannons on Dorchester Heights, just south of Boston. These cannons were the same ones that Colonel Henry Knox had dragged hundreds of miles from the recently captured Fort Ticonderoga, and with straw and blankets muffling the wheels, the Continentals rolled them onto Dorchester Heights, which held a looming position over the British held city of Boston.
When British commanding General William Howe looked out at the artillery laden heights the next morning, he knew his days in Boston were numbered. With the city now indefensible, the British and their Loyalist American allies began to frantically evacuate. By March 27, the entire army had set sail for the safe-haven of Halifax, Nova Scotia. In August, George Washington and Howe would meet again, this time in New York City.

Today in 1915: The Coast Guard is created by an act of Congress.
This engine room is from the U.S. Coast Guard buoy tender Oak. The Oak was built for the U.S. Light House Bureau in 1921 and measured 160 feet long. It was transferred to the U. S. Coast Guard in 1939, when that agency succeeded the Light House Bureau.
Buoy tenders are known as the "Black Fleet" within the Coast Guard. Their hulls are painted black to hide the unavoidable scrapes and bumps from hauling buoys and channel markers.
The engine and radio room were removed from the Oak in 1971 and installed in the museum in 1974. Visit our "On the Water" exhibition.
The legal basis for the Coast Guard is Title 14 of the United States Code, which states: "The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times." Upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy.
Learn Our History Today: On January 13, 1776, during the American Revolution, British troops launched a raid on Prudence Island near Narraganset Bay, Rhode Island. Arriving on the Island in the early morning hours, the Redcoats’ main objective of the raid was not to attack Patriot positions or gain information; it was to capture the large quantity of sheep that roamed the Island.
Valued for their wool, the British greatly wanted to get their hands on Prudence Island’s sheep, but unfortunately for them, the Minuteman Company of Captain Joseph Knight was not about to let that happen. Meeting the Redcoats on the southern beaches of the island, Knight and his men ambushed the scarlet clad columns and poured fire into them. A short and deadly firefight ensued between the two sides, with the patriots eventually forcing the British troops to retreat.
