The DD Council engages communities in advocacy, capacity-building, and systemic change activities

19/09/2024

🌺As part of the DD Council’s 5-year strategic plan, we are conducting an important statewide survey to better understand the mental health needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), a mental health diagnosis, or dual diagnosis. Your participation will play a critical role in identifying the unmet behavioral health needs across Hawaii, particularly in both urban and rural areas.

🌺Our goal is to improve the state's behavioral health care system, ensuring it is better equipped to meet and respond to the unique mental health needs of individuals with IDD and other related conditions. This survey is designed for:

✅Adults with IDD, dual diagnoses, or a mental health diagnosis
✅Parents or guardians of children under 18 who have a mental health diagnosis or IDD

🌺We encourage you to share this survey widely within your networks. Your input is vital to making positive changes and addressing the gaps in care.

✅You can complete the survey by using the link below or by scanning the QR code on the attached flyer.

Thank you for your participation and support in helping us enhance Hawaii's mental health services for those who need them most. 👍

Disaster Resilience & Built Environments Strand https://go.hawaii.edu/Fqc
Chairs: Genesis Leong, Daintry Bartoldus, and Tani Kalei Submission Link: go.hawaii.edu/na2

Build Forward Together: Disaster Resilience & Built Environments

The Build Forward Together motto gives people a sense of belonging and the ability to thrive as a culturally-inclusive society after a disaster. Advocated by people with disabilities, aging and in extreme poverty, this movement aims to build an improved overall quality of life for all. This strand will offer a platform to learn, engage and grow from ideas around built environments (physical infrastructure, digital environments, policy, and social inclusion) created “by us and for us”. We welcome legacy stories, insights, and blueprints for collaboration across sectors aimed at creating a more equitable and resilient world for our future.

Featured topics include:
✔️ Community Planning and Capacity Building – engagement, communications and accessibility, disability decision-making, advocacy, global governance.
✔️ Economics – employment, businesses, workforce development, policy-making.
✔️ Health and Social Services – food, safety, medical, wellbeing.
✔️ Housing – land use, affordable and accessible housing, insurance, independent living.
✔️ Infrastructure Systems – transportation, information and communication technology/internet, facilities.
✔️ Natural and Cultural Resources – disability and Indigenous culture practices, climate justice, local knowledges.

Guiding Questions:
✔️ How do we amplify disability- and diversity-voices in the transformation of disaster resilience & built environments?
✔️ How can the Pac Rim 2025 conference theme be used to bridge academia, research, practice, and advocacy?
✔️ What ways can we “Build Forward Together” to avoid rebuilding and going back to inequitable practices before a disaster?

Aloha Hawaii Folks 🌺 We need your support!
Please share with your networks

It is EXTREMELY important that we get as many people to attend this event virtually as we can to represent Hawaii Statewide!!!! 🌺

This Tuesday, 18 June 2024, NACDD and DD Councils will play an integral role in The White House’s 25th Anniversary Olmstead celebration. (See attached/pasted screenshot) A dozen DD Councils will be represented at the event in-person, and three council members will be speakers. NACDD will be there to represent all of the Councils. And, most importantly, people with IDD are centered at the event – holding six of the 11 speaking elements of the event.

This celebration will be open for the public to attend virtually. Our National has been working closely with the White House on the event. We ask that you all please get this out to your networks. We want as many people as possible to attend, not only our DD council or disability circles. This is not about politics, and it is not just for ‘people who do disability stuff’. Olmstead is all about community, and we hope to get all sorts of members of the community to attend. Real people will be talking about their real lives, and we want everyone to understand what Olmstead is and means to us, and – because having people with disabilities living in the community s god for the WHOLE community – we want people outside of disability circles to understand that Olmstead is good for them. Please, tell you family, friends, neighbors to attend this event. Again, it takes place this Tuesday, 18 June at 7:45am Hawaii Time.

It would be wonderful for the White House to see that Hawaii, the NACDD and the DD Councils can really turn out the folks! We want them to see that we can get people to show up for what matters to us. Please help us make this happen!

People MUST register for the White House event in order to attend virtually. Here is the link to register:
https://pitc.zoomgov.com/webinar/register/WN_CnGD53gbT_aMRrKeG-RrOQ

Once registered, a Zoom link to join the event will be sent out.
Webinar participants will be able to join the event from 7:45 AM- 9:00 AM
