Congratulations to Tomoko and Chokatsu Katsu Tamayose the owners of Sunrise Restaurant Hawaii who celebrate TWENTY-FIVE years of serving wonderful Okinawan food at their iconic restaurant!
Sunrise has always been a gathering place for the Hawaii Okinawan community. It will always have a special place in my heart because it was my introduction to Okinawan food and an important pathway that led to my involvement in the local Okinawan community.
Sunrise is not a restaurant that you quietly eat at your table, it is like a Cheers where people are talking to other people across the room, strangers are pouring you a glass of awamori and sometimes these strangers become like family.
Ippei Nifwee Deebiru Katsu and Tomoko for 25 years of wonderful homestyle Okinawan cooking and ono sushi, for the live music and dancing, for being such an important gathering place for our community, and for helping me discover my roots and heritage. 💜 From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all that you do for your customers!

October 17th is Okinawa Soba Day! Stop by today for some of our ono Okinawa Soba! Dine in or take out. Hope to celebrate Soba Day with all of you!
This designation has been in place since 1978, "when the Japanese Fair Trade Commission decided to finally recognize “Okinawa soba.”
The problem was that “soba” in mainland Japan, was an entirely different food. Soba in mainland Japan is made with buckwheat flour called “Sobako.” Okinawa soba does not include any buckwheat and is made of flour and could not be called “soba” under the Japanese technical definition.
Haitai! Please consider supporting our next door neighbor KAI COFFEE HAWAII. They are open daily from 7 am to 1 pm. There is a window where you can order a myriad of coffees and lattes after having lunch at Sunrise.
Romyn’s first time trying Okinawan Soba!
She liked it! Enjoyed the flavor of the broth, was surprised at the generous portions and loved the pork. Romyn even tried the koregusu (awamori infused with chili pepper). Mahalo for stopping by for lunch!
Tip: Always ask if there is a special of the day when you dine at Sunrise! Today the special was a delicious Fu Champuru! 💜

Sunrise has always been a gathering place for the Hawaii Okinawan community. It will always have a special place in my heart because it was my introduction to Okinawan food and an important pathway that led to my involvement in the local Okinawan community.
Katsu would stand behind his sushi counter most of the night and interact with his customers. For the longest time, I was "George Tamashiro's daughter" and Katsu would always make sure to introduce me to EVERY Uchinanchu who was dining in the restaurant. I have met so many wonderful people at Sunrise, some of them becoming dear friends like いのうえ ちず and Arisa Oshiro and Mitchel Shimamura to name a few.
I remember Katsu telling me, "Hey! Chizu is an editor of a magazine in Okinawa. Help her out." When I met Arisa, he told me, "Hey! Arisa is studying at your college. Help her out." I am so glad I did because both have become part of my family.
Sunrise is not a restaurant that you quietly eat at your table, it is like a Cheers where people are talking to other people across the room, strangers are pouring you a glass of awamori and sometimes these strangers become like family. I introduced my co-worker Daim Zuke to the karate sensei sitting at the table next to ours and they figured out they were related. Only at Sunrise would that happen.
Ippei Nifwee Deebiru Katsu and Tomoko for 24 years of wonderful homestyle Okinawan cooking and ono sushi, for the live music and dancing, for being such an important gathering place for our community, and for helping me discover my roots and heritage. 💜 From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all that you do for your customers!
Funny story. I just texted Tomoko this morning to offer my congratulations and she told me, "I forgot!" LOL! So please order take out this week or dine in at Sunrise and congratulate them so they don't forget again! 😀 Heck, next year will be their 25th anniversary. Can’t forget that! - Shari T.

If there are local places that you treasure, you need to keep checking in on how they are doing and when they need help, we need to send out that bat signal to make sure their doors can stay open.
Sunrise Restaurant holds very special place in my heart. It's the place that connected me to my heritage and introduced me to the Hawaii Okinawan community. Seriously, Katsu would always introduce me to other people dining there as "George Tamashiro's daughter" and that's how I met so many different people in the community and found my way to connecting with my culture. I will always support Sunrise however I can because to me, it is a treasure and a gathering place worth fighting for. - Shari
