All of our designs begin with a basic sketch! This design is Style # 2031—an Elegant High Neck and Long Sleeve Contrasting Design Dress.

• Covering neck for full coverage and formal / classy appearance. Can be changed to scoop neckline.
• Long sleeve for full coverage.
• Bodice are semi fitted design.

This high necked dress with long sleeves can be made with a combination of different fabrics, such as lace with woven fabric. It can be also nice with plain fabric with printed fabric. You can choose any printed fabric from our online selections at Fabric Hawaii. We have lots more fabric selections in our store.

If you want to use your own fabric, we can do that also. However, we cannot work on certain fabrics and some prints may need extra caution. Please consult with us before purchasing fabrics.

We have a deep respect for the history of Hawai’i and are honored to be part of a long tradition here.

It was our honor to create a near exact reproduction of Queen Kamamalut’s gown for our Fashion Journey fashion show. Every possible detail was painstakingly noted and recreated.

However, a few components were not available, such as the 28 unique brass buttons. The original buttons were made of fine, woven threads. Since our reproduction was intended for a fast-paced fashion show, silk was not used as it was for the original gown.

This original gown is housed in Bishop Museum’s archives. There, the archives state that, “It is believed that this gown was created for the Queen while she and King Kamehameha II were in England on the tragic and fateful trip in 1824.”

Palaka fabric is rooted in Hawaiian history. During the late 1800s, plantation workers needed a shirt that could withstand field work. The word “palaka” is actually a transliteration of the English word “frock,” based on the shirts worn by British and American sailors.

Palaka fabric became popular, far beyond the can fields, and we are happy to present our palaka muumuus!

Muumuus are shorter and informal versions of the original holokū, sometimes referred to as a Mother Hubbard dress, which were originally introduced to Hawaii with the arrival of Protestant missionaries in the 1820s. The missionaries were eager to replace the pāʻū Hawaiian women wore, which was basically a piece of bark cloth wrapped around their hips.

In modern times, muumuus are worn for formal events—and for expectant mothers happy to have a unrestricted waist.

We specialize in tailoring beautiful and fitted clothing for any occasion! You’ll start by choosing a design and picking a fabric (including your own, if you prefer), and then we’ll set up a Zoom consultation with you to get your order started.

A holomuu is a descendent of one of Hawaiian’s first western-style dresses, the holoku, which is looser and includes a train, but more body-conscious than a muumuu.
