Jodo Mission of Hawaii
Jodo Buddhism was founded by Honen Shonin in 1175. He taught anyone, and simplified complicated rituals so the common person could attain enlightenment.
One year later, Lahaina Jodo Mission and Lahaina community continue to pick up the pieces with the hopes of getting back.
A Year After a Devastating Fire, Lahaina Is Ready to Rebuild. But How? Much of the fire-ravaged community on the island of Maui has been cleared of debris. But for a town steeped in history, there are thorny questions about what the future should look like.
For those on or visiting Maui this weekend!

Jodo Mission of Hawaii will observe its annual Ojuya Service this Sunday, November 12, 2023 at 10:00 am. The guest speaker will be Lama Wangchuk who had been a Tibetan Buddhist ordained monk for 15 years within the Kagyu order of meditation lineage. He will talk about meditation and will lead us to experience Tibetan way of meditation.
Ojuya which literally means "ten nights" is one of the Jodo Shu practices of the ten-day and ten-night chanting session of calling Buddha name. It is based on the teachings of the Immeasurable Life Sutra which promise the benefits of birth in the Pure Land for those who chant "Namu Amida Butsu" for ten days and ten nights. The origin of this practice is traced back to the 15th century, when "Taira no Sadakuni" vowed to renounce his worldly life and stay at the Shinnyo-do temple for three days and three nights. However, he changed his mind after a monk's dream. Sadakuni inherited his family's fortune. This story impressed the Sh**un Ashikaga Yoshinori, who ordered him to continue the chanting for seven more days and nights. Since then, this ojuya practice became a popular ritual in the Jodo Shu and some temples became famous for their different styles of chanting. This Ojuya also incorporates some folk customs as offering new crops and sweets to the Buddha. We customarily bring sweet treats to share with everyone. Also refreshments will be served after the service.
Please come for this in-person Ojuya service!
