August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month! Everyone's breastfeeding experience is different. Join us in celebrating all the benefits, joys and challenges of breastfeeding this month.
Breast milk is the best food for babies in the first year of life. It helps them grow healthy and strong and protects them from infections and illness. You may have heard people say that breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world. The truth is that breastfeeding isn’t always easy. There are so many physical, emotional, and mental changes after giving birth.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month. For many years, vaccines have played a very important role in community health. They have helped bring diseases like polio, measles, and whooping cough to an all-time low and provide protection to vulnerable groups, especially pregnant people and newborns.
No matter where you are in your pregnancy or motherhood journey, talk to your doctor about staying updated with immunizations to protect you, your family, and your community.

This week our National Service Partner, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., celebrates their ! Since the 1970s, we have worked together to help families and babies get the best possible start, including one of their signature programs, Project Cradle Care,to improve pregnancy outcomes in high-risk communities.
Families are breaking records. Unfortunately, not all of them are good. Support March of Dimes this Giving Day to help moms and babies who face alarming rates of maternal death and preterm birth, racial disparities, and a lack of access to healthcare.
When you donate on Giving Day, you’re helping people like Erika and Kris Young, whose daughter, Sommer, only lived for two hours after complications arose during labor.
Protecting the health of every family is possible—if we all do our part. Together, we can make this the best Giving Day yet.
One day. One mission. One day to make a difference for every family. Donate to March of Dimes on Giving Day, August 22.

Join us as we honor Black Maternal Mental Health Week by shining a light on the unique challenges and experiences faced by Black mothers. It's time to amplify voices, raise awareness, and advocate for better mental health support for Black women during and after pregnancy.
Black Maternal Mental Health Week (July 19 – 25) raises awareness of maternal mental health issues affecting Black women during pregnancy, childbirth, and after.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mental health conditions (such as depression, anxiety, death by su***de, and substance use disorders) are the leading cause of maternal mortality. Perinatal mood disorders are one of the leading complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Racial disparities are well documented in the diagnosis and treatment of maternal mental health issues. Perinatal mood disorders can affect any woman, yet Black women often face stress and health disadvantages that increase their likelihood. The stark reality is:
1 in 5 new moms experience a maternal mental health condition. However, 40% of Black women experience maternal mental health symptoms—nearly twice the rate of all women. Up to half of these women do not receive any support or treatment.
Join the fight for healthy moms, strong babies and families by demanding in Hawaii for improved access to quality health care, healthy equity and prevention at marchofdimes.org/blanketchange

Bringing a child into the world is both beautiful and life changing. Amidst the joy of becoming a parent, many also experience challenges with mental health in the postpartum period. Mental health can be a particularly vulnerable time in the postpartum period due to hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, physical recovery from childbirth, and the challenges adjusting to parenthood. Supporting mental health during this time period is essential for both parents and babies.
Postpartum doulas are trained professionals who provide physical, emotional, and informational support to families during the postpartum period. One of their primary focuses is to support maternal mental health, which can include:
💜Active listening and emotional support.
📚Education and guidance.
☎️Resource referral and coordination.
Have you looked into a postpartum doula in Hawaii? Learn more about how postpartum doulas can provide mental health support: https://www.marchofdimes.org/find-support/blog/role-postpartum-doulas-mental-health-support

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. In the United States, it’s estimated that 1 out of every 5 women will experience a mental health condition during pregnancy or in the first year after giving birth. Among those who show symptoms of a mental health condition (such as depression and anxiety), about 75 percent don’t receive treatment. When it comes to postpartum depression (PPD), women of color are disproportionately affected—more than 50 percent of PPD cases go unreported among this group.
Racial disparities are well documented in the diagnosis and treatment of maternal mental health issues. Safe day-to-day living conditions and health care that are free of perceived or actual differential treatment are critical to improving health outcomes.
