On September 10, 1942, Nancy Harkness Love founded the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), where 25 pioneering women pilots began delivering aircraft to military bases.
On August 5, 1943, less than a year later, the WAFS merged with the Women's Flying Training Detachment to form the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). While most WASP pilots flew ferry missions, some undertook unique and risky operations, including piloting Navy and Army bombers for targetry missions. Except for combat missions, they had undertaken every task male pilots had along with the risks. Their efforts not only provided essential logistical support, but inspired new generations of women to serve for years to come.

Time to paws and celebrate National Dog Day! 🐶
War dogs or military working dogs have been around for centuries worldwide.
Messenger dogs were a key part of communications operations in the Pacific where dense jungles and rough terrain made for spotty and sometimes unreliable radio communication. Messenger dogs were trained with two handlers. One stayed back to receive messages and one went out with troops to be able to relay information back to headquarters.
Thank you to our Gold Sponsor, CarWash808 Express, for their incredible support of our newest exhibition, "The Walt Disney Studios and World War II"! WWII P-38 Fighter Ace, Col. Perry J. “PJ” Dahl's inspiring tales of aerial combat are nothing short of what legends are made of. Entering combat just shy of his 20th birthday, but looking closer to 15, PJ needed extra seat cushions to reach the pedals of his plane.
"At 5’4”, I was passed over by the basketball team," PJ laughs. Yet, he soon became a giant in the air, scoring nine victories while flying with the famed 475th Fighter Group known as "Satan’s Angels."
Help us preserve heroic stories like Dahl’s in our new P-38 Lightning exhibit. Your donation will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000 by the 475th Fighter Group Historical Foundation. Every contribution makes a difference!

reminds us a lot of a middle seat – sometimes over shadowed but important for the whole setup. There is one middle seat we still wonder about – in traditional torpedo/bombers, a pilot, an observer, and a gunner/radio operator sat behind each other, like ducks in a row.
At first glance, the Grumman TBF/TBM Avenger torpedo/bomber looks like it has the same seating plan. There is a pilot, a long canopy, and then a gun position. Yet World War II Avenger photographs rarely show someone in the middle seat. Where did the third crew member sit?

Have you heard of a "Short Snorter"?
This unique tradition began before WWII and continued throughout the war. Allied service members collected signed dollar bills from their overseas travels, often celebrating with a drink. These bills were taped into chains, with the longest and most signed collections being the most prized.
But why the name "Short Snorter"? "Snort" was old slang for an alcoholic drink, and "short" indicated a smaller measure. If you signed a short snorter and the person who owned it didn’t show it when asked, they had to buy you a drink or give you a dollar.
Come see over a hundred “Short Snorter” artifacts and learn more about this fascinating tradition at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum on Saturday, August 10!
There will be two presentations available for you to attend: 11:00AM, 2:00PM.
