Members of our finance and pharmacy team at Waikiki Health(WH) attended the recent Ryan White (RW) Conference in Atlanta, along with other grantees and community stakeholders. In July, the Federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded the continuation of a three-year grant contract in support of our Ryan White Part C Early Intervention Services (EIS) Program.

The RW funding supports direct care and treatment services for people living with HIV/AIDS. Primary care and preventative services include laboratory services, ongoing treatment, and follow up for HIV/AIDS and its co-morbidities. Patients may also receive oral health care, behavioral health care, nutritional consultation, pharmacy services, and referrals.

Waikiki Health’s EIS Program is committed to the early detection and treatment of HIV, which can help prevent the onset of AIDS and other opportunistic infections. WH is at the forefront of HIV medicine and prevention, providing comprehensive care since 1992; and is the preeminent provider of prevention and holistic services for those impacted by HIV/AIDS in Hawaii. Waikiki Health (WH) ended National Health Center Week (NHCW) on Friday, August 9 and celebrated our hard-working staff by throwing a pizza party at all our sites. NHCW, which ran from August 4 – 10 had focus days throughout the week and August 9 was Health Center Staff Appreciation Day. A huge mahalo to HMSA for helping to support the pizza parties that were agencywide. Planning a pizza party for over 200 employees at five separate locations takes an entire team of dedicated helper-employees. The staff at Whole Foods Kahala and Queen Street were so accommodating, too!

We would also like to thank Ohana Health Plan for donating canvas bags to fill with Goodies for homeless people and for dropping off cookies for our WH staff. UnitedHealthcare donated appropriate In-Kind items for homeless individuals and dropped off fruit platters and scones for our staff. Aloha Care showed support by bringing a “Happy National Health Center Week. Mahalo! Waikiki Health” banner, along with a monetary gift which went towards our Health Fair we had for the homeless community on Monday, August 5. HMSA also made a monetary donation. We couldn’t have done it without all our awesome sponsors!

Celebrating Community Health Center Week was an opportunity to highlight the commitment and passion of our nation’s Community Health Center staff, board members, and supporters who make it possible to provide quality, comprehensive healthcare services to more than 31.5 million patients across nearly 15,000 communities annually. Like other CHC employees, our staff work very hard to obtain quality medical and social services that are accessible and affordable to everyone, regardless of ability to pay.

More than 50 visitors attended the fair held at our Keauhou Shelter in Moiliili including Hawaii State Senator Sharon Y. Moriwaki, WH Board members, Keauhou Shelter residents, WH patients, and passers-by. Participants engaged in educational screening activities.
