King Kamehameha Day, celebrated on June 11th, honors King Kamehameha I, the first monarch who united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom in 1810. The holiday was established by King Kamehameha V in 1871 to honor his great-grandfather, and it became one of the first holidays to be proclaimed by the Governor of Hawaii and the Hawaii State Legislature when Hawaii became a state in 1959.
