Series #2: Be the leader you’d want to follow…

…a leader should practice ACCOUNTABILITY.

Why?

👉 As a leader, you’re going to make mistakes, some leaders more than others. When you don’t accept blame and instead choose to blame others, you will lose the trust of your coworkers, peers, and team.

👉 Not only will you lose their trust, you’ll start a trend of others also not taking accountability for their mistakes or actions.

👉 True leaders know when to raise their hand and say, “That was me, I messed up.” Leaders also know when to keep their hand down and not take all of the credit for the actions of the team. Instead they say, “This is a product of everyone and their efforts.”

👉 A leader who holds themself accountable will do the same for their team. Accountability is contagious and builds a a culture of responsibility, which ultimately pushes people to be the best version of themselves.

Be a good leader.

“The Air National Guard has one of the greatest enlisted forces in the world. We are a professional, diverse and adaptable force that will lead us into the future. As your Command Chief, it is my job to ensure that we have Airmen who are ready when their state and nation calls. My three main focus areas will help us get there.”

Today we ask that everyone take a moment to remember fallen weather warrior Capt. Nathan J. Nylander. On the morning of April 27, 2011, Nylander was at the Afghan Air Force Headquarters when a gunman entered the Joint Operations Center shooting seven Airmen and one contractor. When the gunman began shooting, personnel began moving down the hallway away from the gunman’s location. With two officers providing cover, Nylander evacuated everyone from his location and ensured everyone made it out of the headquarters building. He could have continued to safety with the rest of those evacuating the building, but chose instead to return and assist his fellow Airmen who were still in the building. Nylander was in a firing position next to Capt. Bradley in the hallway when the gunman emerged. Bradley and Nylander engaged and wounded the gunman. Bradley gave a signal to withdraw and exited the building. Nylander chose to remain in the building and did not withdraw. When the gunman re-emerged into the hallway, Nylander engaged the gunman again. During the exchange, Nylander was shot twice. Bleeding from his wounds, Nylander began to move toward the rear entrance. Although seriously wounded, Nylander continued to engage the gunman until his gun jammed. When Nylander attempted to exit, he was killed by the gunman. During the second exchange with Nylander, the rest of the building was able to either exit the building or was able to barricade the doors to their room. In fact, the gunman went upstairs to kill more people but was not able to because of the wounds sustained and the additional time Nylander was able to give those still in the building. His actions prevented further loss of life, including that of other U.S. personnel who remained in the headquarters. It was these actions which earned Nylander the Silver Star.
